This Hindu temple is devoted to Karni Mata, a goddess who is said to have reincarnated her devotees into rats upon death. Today the temple is home to hundreds of rats which represent the reincarnated. Hindus come to worship at the temple and bring offerings of sweets to the rats. The rats are sacred, and it is said that if you kill a rat (by accidentally stepping on it), you must replace the rat with its weight in silver.

I was watching a special series last night on the Mekong River, http://www.asiasteps.com/archives/204 and they had a segment with a buddhist monk who "protected" an endangered series of flying fox bats (they look like little foxes with leather wings, very weird looking). The region they live in is poor and apparently they taste good barbecued so there's a bit of a problem as some people ignore the monk and kill the bats for food.

I'll add this to my list of places that I won't be visiting on vacation. Rats just creep me out to much.

I love rats. I would love to have a pair of rats, but my mom doesn't like them.

They're very intelligent and social.
