I have to do an essay for my psychology course on depression and the 5 approaches psychologists use.

I would have no problems with writing an essay solely about depression but i'm not so sure about the 5 approaches...i've just started the course and we've only learnt about cognitive and behaviourist approaches...the essay hasnt reallly been explained to us yet, so i'm not EXACTLY sure what i'm supposed to be writing.. but if anyone knows of any useful websites, i'd be very grateful.

Thanks xx

HOpe everyone is having a good day!

Yeah..i think what we have to write about is how a psychologist or therapist(whatever it may be) would go about diagnosing someone with depression and how they would work out that this person has depression/schizophrenia(i chose to do depression because i thought it'd be easier to write about but i'm not so sure now).

I really need to ask my lecturer/teacher on thursday more about it, i don't think anybody else really knows what exactly we're supposed to do.

There are five approaches to counseling like the Behaviorist, Rational and so forth. I am sure that if you did a search on the web you could find them.

I have a few psychology links on my website, including some that might help you. http://ddiamond.net From where it says Navigation on the front page, go to links, and scroll down to "Psychology." I'm always finding more stuff, so I need to update my links and add new ones too. One of the things I have been meaning to get done soon, when I get a minute.

It sounds like a very interesting assignment!

Thanks Rap.

yeah i think it will be an interesting assignment once i know exactly what i'm supposed to be looking for.

The class is so disorganised because it is lecturers coming in from the college to the school and last week was the first lesson we've had and we're supposed to have had about 6..also the lecturers aren't in as often as they should be because the timetables are different so we're not getting as much tuition as we should be, but i have a particular interest in psychology(probably because of some of my experiences) so i think my motivation will be increased.

Thanks again x

Help? Yes I need some myself. I am not here to study depression. I am not a Student only was at one time. I am here for a different kind of help that being the help from other people SUFFERING from the EFFECTS if emotional and mental Disorders.

WHICH ONE OF THE TWO ARE YOU SUFFERING FROM AND SEEKING SUPPORT?

Or do you just need assistance with your book report? While you come here for information on a book report, there are many suffering needing some support of there disorders that can not be looked up in a da*n textbook.

By the way I suffer from Bi polar, PTSD, Peronality disorders, and adult ADD. Nice to meet you.

I am grateful if you will do your reasearch elsewhere, cause I am a person with problems not a case study. And maybe if your heart is in the right place you will go ahead and research schizophrenia, it may not be 'easier' but maybe you someday will be able to actually put your degree to use someday.

Hi Kris,

You must be having an off day today. {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}} I don't think that Laura was asking us to do her work for her, or that she is here to study us. Why don't you click on her profile and read her other posts? A lot of us here are psychology students as well as members of this forum, and discussing psychology in general is part of what the general forum is for, isn't it? If you visit docjohn's home page (the link that says 'home' in the top menu bar) he invites people to come in and discuss issues in psychology. Understanding it can help us deal with it better, and if we didn't have psychology students we wouldn't have the help available that we need.

I hope you are feeling better tomorrow.

If you really get stuck and cannot find what you are looking for I think I might have kept on old textbook from my counseling class that had a huge section on the five different approaches, what they are, what are their points, strengths, weakness, etc. I can try to dig it up.

Ok..in response to Kris...I'm sorry if you feel that way about my request. I don't yet have my textbook, and seeing as alot of people here will have looked at some pretty good psychology websites i thought this would be a good place to ask...instead of looking at the thousands of them that come up when you do a search..i tried that and didn't have much luck.

I've not posted in general but have posted in the SI and depression forums...although i'm pretty new here and i haven't posted much because i find myself stuck for words..i have read alot of the stuff on here though.

I'm not seeking support for anything,..i haven't plucked up the courage to do so!

Thanks Jessica..but i think we should be getting more information about it tomorrow, i should have maybe waited until after tomorrow to see if i was still stuck.

Claire x

We do have a rather strict rule here about conducting research. I am not under the impression that you are "doing research" here as much as asking for sources of information (i.e. you are looking for reference for your course, not looking for us to be that reference).

But please understand that many members here are VERY sensitive to that concern, both as a matter of policy and as a matter of having been "burned" at other websites by such things. DocJohn, the creator of these forums, has a stict policy that he will NEVER use any of the members or posts here as a part of his ongoing work in the field, and that he will NOT ALLOW anyone else to do so, and that promise is why many people feel safe as members here.

With regard to what might be personal support that you may benefit from, don't feel pressured to post, but do read and post when you feel comfortable. You will find that this is a very supportive place. We do insist that any posts in that regard, as well as reading, be for personal support and understanding of these illness, and not be "fishing for information" for the purpose of coursework. You were straightforward in your request in this thread so I do not imagine that will be a problem.

With regard to info, the information on the home page of this website (click on "home" on the top left) is chock full of information and links to informative website, from quizzes to explanations and definitions to current news and opinions and views from the medical community. It might be a good place to start for all of the information you are looking for.

Claire,

I just realized that I keep seeing your sn as having "Laura" in it. Sorry - my head is playing tricks on me. I apologize for that. Hope you are able to find the information you are looking for, and you are welcome to PM me if you like.

When you say "approaches" do you mean the THEORETICAL BRANCHES within the field of psychology... or TECHNIQUES/INTERVENTIONS applied by psychologists?

If approach = theoretical branch, have you considered:

Gestalt, Experimental, Humanistic (www.ahpweb.org), Rational Emotive (www.rebt.org), Behavioral, and/or Group (www.yalom.com) models?

If approach = intervention, how about...?

talk therapy
sand tray, play, or art therapies
hypnosis
phototherapy (for those seasonally affected)
NLP
referrals for medication, ECT, hospitalization
