> If only corn oil could power cars...

Can't it? I thought some kinda oil (maybe peanut) worked okay... Pretty sure corn oil did too... But... Conflicting the corn lobby with the oil lobby... Bad move...

I thought the US had more corn products than they knew what to do with already. Hence the substitution of sugar (used in the rest of the world) with corn syrup (which tends to be used in the US in soft drinks etc). I'm fairly sure that experts agree that sugar is superior flavor-wise... But then you factor in the corn lobby and... Well its no wonder that diet coke can do its nutrasweet (probably carcinagenic but who cares) 'just for the taste of it' campaign.

Sorry... But corn syrup really does taste nasty...
If it powers cars, then well, good for it :-)

Here in the UK, petrol is £1.02 per litre = $2.06 per litre. One litre = 0.2 gallons!

Here in Southern California, the price at most stations is in the 3.50 - 3.60 range.

In the late 1970's, President Carter had a plan for making the US energy independent by the end of the 20th Century. We voted him out in 1980. Now, 28 years later, we are farther and farther from that goal.

Dude, that's why I've already started saving money for this summer - just for gas. I don't think I'll be going out very much just because I don't have money for gas.

you cant compare the price of gas here with europe. in europe the higher gas taxes are used to fund social services. its not a matter of the us getting a break . I find your anti americanism amusing. Im pretty sure you would be speaking japanese right now if not for the US. but what have you done for me lately , right?

Oh, really? Last time I looked, Japan was a LONG way from Europe. Rather, it's far closer to America than to Europe!

We are not all anti-American in Europe you know. But recently you Americans haven't exactly helped Europeans at all so don't sound like you think Americans are so much better than Europeans. And if you're talking about the help you gave Europe in the War, it's only because of Pearl Harbor that you were dragged into it anyway, otherwise you'd probably have sat around and waited until Europe fell...

Since the OP asked for opinions regarding the high price of gas and has received much input to also include some digs at different nations, and not very nicely done, this thread has not continued in the way of our Community Guidelines as to being supportive and without flaming. At this point, I am going to lock this thread.

Please folks, remember that each country, each community has their own laws, regulations and taxes. This thread was not meant to start an argument about such things. This has turned into a political soapbox and that also is not inline with our Community Guidelines.
