Herschel Walker has gone public (with a book too) about his D.I.D. saying he has up to 12 personalities. He's been in therapy for 8 years and is progressing well he feels.

This might be a good thing for those with DID, and further the study and understanding of this disorder.

He was on Nightline last night promoting his book too. I remain skeptical, for many, many reasons, but I don't want to get slaughtered for saying why. Herschel Walker (football player) admits mental illness

Call me a cynic, but there are people who, once in the limelight for an extended period, try hard to find a way to get back in it once they're out of it -- even if they do it in a disorderd way (OJ Simpson, anyone?).

I wish I could say what I really want to. Herschel Walker (football player) admits mental illness

Yes, well he could write about anything sports related and sell books, he didn't need to conjure up a disorder he's been going to therapy for 8 YEARS just to write a book I think.

Plus, the media often tries to find the controversy in any story, that's what makes it "newsworthy" to them. That they admitted that most of the experts agree to such a disorder, yet they focus on the few that don't believe in it should tell us something. But it will draw out some good stuff I think, and help the general population to address it and maybe figure things out for good. Herschel Walker (football player) admits mental illness

I do wonder why someone on a mental health site would first doubt someone who shares their story of suffering, rather than be in line to support them. I think most members here prefer we accept their stories, and not doubt them. Herschel Walker (football player) admits mental illness

Well, he was on Nightline.

His wife said yes, his coach said no, his therapist said yes, his friends said no.

No history of horrific abuse was noted in the program.

I am not sure what it might do for DID. They showed him with the following personality types:

1) Football
2) Harley Davidson fan
3) Wife beater
4) ...I can't remember the others

Nightline devoted 2 segments to it. The program did state that it is the most conterversial diagnosis among mental health practioners.
