Can anyone suggest movies about mental illness?
One that comes to mind is " A Beautiful Mind", another one is "I never Promised You A Rose Garden".
Anything else?
Thanks!

Girl, Interrupted and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, though both were better as books.

Haven't seen the movie, but Prozac Nation was a spellbinding book.

a must see is "One Flew Over A Cuckoo's Nest"
if you want to see what terrors we had to put up with in the old days, Snake Pit was very realistic.

(((((((biplol))))))) I made my T read Prozac Nation, along with "The Noonday Demon" by Andrew Sullivan. They are the two best books on major depression I have ever read. If you need someone truly to understand what it's like, I recommend those two books heartily.

I do not know if this is a trigger.. I just used the trigger icon just in case....

Radio Flyer (child abuse, DID)

</div></font></blockquote><font class="post">

Ummmm The movie Radio Flyer is not about DID.. It is about child abuse and a child's imagination. There are two brothers..And the ending as to what happened to the younger brother is pretty much left up to the viewer. One of those endings without really an ending...Makes you wonder what did really happen to him...It is NOT about DID...IMHO

If that would be the case I would have to change my nic asap....

The plane they built was their creative way to escape the abuse. In reality, we know the plane did not really fly. And maybe the King killed the younger brother and this was the way the older brother dealt with it.. Or maybe he died when the plane rolled down the hill and crashed.. His used his creative imagination to deal with his loss and the abuse. Or there could be various endings as what happened to the younger bother. Guess I would have to "think" harder about it...... hmmmmmmmmm I can not see in any way that this movie is in anyway related to DID....

PS: I wish you would consider removing the DID after your description of the movie Radio Flyer...

Thank you to all of you for your responses! Thank you Jennie for your generous response! Thanks for indicating the specifics next to each movie! Certainly helps me zoom in.
I'm particularly looking for those with content of depression and/or suicide. Last year they showed a movie about a suicidal man, can't recall the name of it, something with the word Sea in it, it was a foreign language film (w/English subtitles) I think it's called The Sea Inside.
Thanks again, guys!

Dear Jennie - Thank YOU very much for the list..... I will use it to watch a few of the ones I missed.

Plus - I notice that YOU did not have "The Secret Window" by Johnny Depp listed..... have you seen it? - it is a great movie in understanding DID / MP.

Radio Flyer
1992-USA-Family Drama/Childhood Drama
N.Y. Times Review by Vincent Canby

PLOT DESCRIPTION
Two brothers are the victims of their widowed mother's violent drunkard husband who spares no rod with the youngest brother.
Reverting to a world of make-believe, they imagine that their Radio Flyer wagon can fly...
and that in it they can escape their tormenting stepfather.
This film deals in an almost make-believe manner with the serious issue of child abuse.

radio flyer . . . good point. I'm not a psychologist. All the labels next to the titles above are my interpretation of the movies. RADIO FLYER was definitely a very creative story. I'm sure there are several interpretations. Overall, the movie doesn't make sense to me, unless the older child was DID. Maybe I should read up more about this story. I'm sorry (((((radio flyer))))).

(It could also be argued that Donnie Darko did not have schizophrenia. And another, I'm certain that KPax character had schizophrenia. These are two other movies I've like to debate.)

Maybe in the meantime you could remove the DID after your description. movies about mental illness

((((((((((jennie)))))))))

I guess everyone has "their" opinion on the movie. Guess that is what makes the movie interesting........it is not always cut and dry as to what happened to the younger brother. But we do know in reality that the plane did not fly around the world and the younger brother did not send post cards of his travels...( the younger brother was I dunno maybe 5 or 7) .I guess in some ways he just vanished.. but that doesn't even make sense... Just this is the first time I have ever read where one thought that movie was about DID.. Guess we are all entitled to our opinions..

PS: I am not saying that it is bad the dx of DID. I think DID is a very creative way for a child to have endured any kind of abuse. I am trying to say is that I am not talking bad about DID or that I think it is bad... I just might be defensive because of what some Ts tried to say about me...I do not want in any way to hurt anyone that is DID by my comments. It is not bad to be DID... k......I think I am digging myself in a hole again....... and I mean no harm to any that are DID...I have a few friends in real life that are DID and they are wonderful.. I love them dearly... k

I am sorry.... I may have over reacted.... Going now to chill and eat some ice cream...maybe even some popcorn...

huggggg

That would be AWESOME!!! - please let me know when YOU do this, for I would love to place a link for it on my website....... on my Emotional Healing page.

But in the mean time I have saved this thread to my favorites.... so I can easily find it when I want to look for a movie to watch for better understanding of the mental health issues.
