I was at the beauty shop on Saturday getting my roots touched up and hair cut.... and this subject came up.

Do you TIP your BEAUTICIAN for services rendered?

My tip depends on a variety of things, service rendered, time spent in the chair, attitude, ability etc.

I do not have enough hair to bother tipping anyone to cut it LOL but I am 4A here I try to tip generously at restaurants etc. if the server displays a good attitude and a real interest in making me satisfied with the experiance.

Just like a restaurant - the amount depends on the bill and the service.

And if a separate woman does the washing, I slip her a few bucks too since they get paid very little.

It really depends for me, if I'm in one of those walk in chain places, that I sometimes go to in emergencies, I always tip, because I know the owners expect it and factor that into employee wages. If I'm at a salon and it's the owner who cuts my hair, I don't usually tip becasue i figure he's usually set prices to cover his costs and ensure a fair profit.

I recently started going to a salon that's very reasonable, by local standards, and whey you pay be credit card they actually cross out the tips line and write included on it, which I really like.

I'm very generous tipper when I go to the spa for the day for the beuticians who do my manicures / pedicures because I know they get paid crap.

My vote got messed up. I tip to "round" out the cost usually. I go the same place each time but only once or twice a year usually, sometimes not even that often.

TIPS means to insure proper service

all personal services require a tip
many get 15-18%, like restaurants, etc.

where someone personally handles you, tip 20% and more.
such as a massage, or a hairstyling, or a facial - start at $10 for basic, more for additional time or services (if you get $100. highlights & cut, $20+ tip, $2+ shampoo)
shampoo person - $2
brows, etc. - 5+

somewhere on the web you can find a list of acceptable TIPS for specific svcs. including taxi drivers, flower delivery person, lawn-mowing, etc.

peace,
nightbird

Here's a U.S. tipping guide:

http://www.tipping.org/tips/us.html

We were lucky because our German teacher told us before we went to Switzerland that the Swiss don't do tips unless it's truly outstanding, above-and-beyond service for something and then it's just a token amount. I only tipped once I think, when a hotel clerk spent over an hour calling all over Switzerland making me hotel reservations for the rest of our trip (I'd been looking up places the night before on the Internet and reserving then; however, Internet connection was costly, like $30 for 24 hours).

The going tipping % is now %18 here in the USA. (Years ago it was %15.)

The only one you don't tip is the owner of the establishment. So if the owner does your hair, or the owner of the restaurant is your waiter, you don't tip.

For luggage handling when traveling, everyone who touches your bag gets a dollar. If the cabbie puts your bag into the trunk, he gets a dollar (but only once for in/out) and thus along the trip. It's $1 per bag, by the way.

The thinking is, if you can't afford to tip (and by that it is meant to tip the proper amounts) then you shouldn't be going there (restaurant, salon, travel.) You are cheating the worker of wages if you don't tip properly.

TIPS (for services rendered) Good topic, btw.

I tip my hairdresser $20.00 for haircut & highlights as she is a young lady, newly married with a husband out of work. She also will fit me in to trim my bangs in between appts. w/ no charge when I get fed up with them.

We also share knitting patterns, books & recipes. I'm 54 now & well remember when we were young marrieds w/ a very tight budget so I like to "play it forward" as many generous friends helped us out at those times with giving us their no longer wanted clothes or extra OJ or milk they bought to give us when they found it on sale.

I distinctly remember a young couple at church in those days who had children the same ages/sexes as ours & they went to school together & we were close friends as families, but they went out to Burger King every Sunday after church & often would suggest we go with them. We were so amazed that they could afford to go to Burger King & EVERY week!!

We had to say "no" & biked home (church close to home & we saved on gas money by biking--early environmentalists? This was 25 years ago!) to our thinly spread tuna sandwiches.

But those times really did build character in our children (& us) as both my husband & I came from affluent (though very dysfunctional for me) homes.--Suzy

I always tip for a haircut...

Like I recently got a haircut and they're really cheap...only $12 for a woman's cut. Well she had so much trouble with my hair because she couldn't get her scissors to cut through my hair because it's so insanely thick! Anyways...I tipped her $5 because of all her troubles!!!! I wanted to give her a whole $20 for everything but she wouldn't take it...so I just gave her a $5. That poor girl!
