I was wondering if someone could give me some advice about the best way to go about looking for a used car? This will be my first car and I really have no idea where I should ever start looking, how long it should take, and so forth.
Any thoughts?

Jessica

Jessica, having been through this a few times, I have only one piece of advice: TAKE A MAN WITH YOU. Your dad, your bf, someone you grab off the street and pay to come along :-), whatever -- just take a man with you. I have done it both ways. When my dad went with me, I got good, honest deals. When I've gone alone, I've gotten steamrollered by salesmen who look at me and think to themselves, "Oh goody! A woman! She doesn't know jack about cars, so I can take advantage of her!" Seriously. On the occasions I have gone to buy a car by myself, I have been completely disregarded as not knowing what I wanted or what I was talking about. If you go with some muscle behind you, you'll have a much easier time of it! :-)

Good luck.

Candy

PS: Consumer Reports has an annual car-buying guide. That's a good place to start.

This is where my husband and I go to look at resale values, blue book prices, etc. If this link doesn't work, what you're looking for is

Kelly Blue Book

Good luck, you must be very excited!

Hi Jessica -- All the info here is good. Do as much research as you have time to do.

If you do not have a knowledgable man to help you (and I generally seem to wind up with the poets who know even less than I do -- in fact, I generally know more, thanks to experience and research) -- you may be able to get a mechanic to do a check for a fee. This will allow you to find out about things that are not apparent, like the oil leak -- brakes that are worn and may need replacement in a few months, rebuilt engine (had a friend who got a car with a rebuilt and it blew in a few months, leaving her with no car and no money to get another), etc.

Good luck with this. Hope you get a real peach.

Thank you all so much!!!!!!
I will definately take my boyfriend with me when I go. I am still debating about whether to go to a dealer or private seller. My boyfriend knows a lot about cars and can fix almost any problem with them as long as they are American. So I am shooting for something American. I know that he will beable to tell me if a car is a dud or not and what I should look for in mileage, repairs, and what not.
Thank you for the Blue Book link..I completely forgot about checking there for info. That will be so helpful to me.
I am excited about buying a car and I do have some time to do it so I am hoping that it will work out well. I guess I just feel over my head right now and wanted some advice from others. This is kinda scary for some reason...

Thank you all...you are wonderful
Jessica

I once bought a car because the two young guys who worked on my car drove Mustangs. I went there and said, "I have to get a new car. What do you recommend." And they said, "We have Mustangs, so we know the most about them." It worked out really well for me.

We are looking as we speak. I have been searching the papers and am going to go to some dealerships this weekend. I am thinking about a Chevy or a Ford....something not white...and good on gas mileage.
Mustangs do rock though!! I wish that I could afford one.

Chevy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's what I have. 1968 Chevy Impala 327. White, not good on gas mileage, hahahahahahaha! But the paint will change soon, and soon the carburator will be rebuilt and that will help with gas mileage.

Jessica,

There is this website: http://www.carfax.com/ . You can go there and enter the VIN of an automobile and can check just about everything about the car.

Hope this helps.
