I read the first couple of pages before I lost my concentration. A very intresting article indeed. It's sort of weird though that my brother and I's relationship was alot like James's and Claires. Not to that total extreme, but practicly so, and my step-brother and sister had an even more abusive relationship then that.

it's interesting young boys are more predominantly diagnosed among children, women more predominantly diagnosed among adult cases.....females emotions tend to be more complex, it seems, males can have more anger as young children, then, females illustrate the complexity, of adult bipolar.....

i posted about this article a few days ago in the bipolar forum with a link to an ad-free 11 page print out. i was disappointed that no one responded.
jennifer egan's article is very complex. i don't doubt that boys can be more destructive than girls can be. this probably leads to earlier diagnosis.
i hope that more viewers here read the article but i think it might hard for some of us to understand because it is above our level and attention-span with all the meds we take.

The MHA (Mental Health America--formerly Mental Health Assoc.) director is a therapist who leds the support group I go to for people with depression & bipolar. I emailed the article to her as she also keeps up on the current literature on these topics. I did not find it above my level of understanding or too difficult for me to concentrate on & I take 6 meds for bipolar 1 & have ADHD & take Concerta for that.

I definitely could feel the pain & desperation of the parents. I have a friend who has a 21-year-old son with bipolar who is delusional & was just released from the hospital today. He is not stable. He's been in the hospital 4 times in the last year (since his initial break). He has had a suicide attempt & threatened to kill his mother. The hospital said they have done all they can do for him & this is about as good as he is going to get. The mother is scared. The hospital said no group homes (very few of them here) have room; it is either send him home or to the homeless shelter! Talk about heartless. I thought the people at the hospital were supposed to be there to help--not just dump people when they are weak.

I didn't see the article mentioned in the bipolar thread as it is lower down on the list of threads & I often run out of time & don't get down that far!--Suzy
