Taking the easy road again, not looking for work and going out and spending money freely on junk food and cheap thrills, and once more i have steadily chipped away at my savings . . . it happens so slowly that i almost don't notice it, i just take maybe 50 dollars here and there and before you know it, i have less than 50 dollars to my name. i'm not going to be homeless or anything, i just keep doing this you know?

I know that it doesn't make you feel any better, but it's a trap that a lot of people fall into. Look at the positive, you're saving.

Please don't look at it as a failure, it only makes you feel worse and you don't need that.
I don't know the full in's and out's of them but have you thought of getting an ICA account? I don't think you can take money out of them, well only a certain amount every month or so... maybe it could help you save and not spend it on things you don't necessarily need. Also... instead of indulging in junk food and things you don't really need, try making a list of things you can do instead that don't cost you and try and do those things? Or maybe write a list of 'needs' 'could do withs' 'would likes'... try and stick to this list and buy the things in your need list first, then things that you could do with (but could cope without) and then every so often treat yourself? Just some ideas. Go easy on yourself, you haven't failed. Molly

You haven't failed. You now have another chance to start over, start new. It's not a failure, it's a learning experience. Thank God you still have somewhere to live, food to eat and a little money. Good luck on your new attempt to reach your goal.

I'm going to try and save 50 dollars a week and put it away.

BiscuitTin, what is most important is the desire, and then the creation of the habit of saving. The habit can be built with as little as $1 a week. As long as that $1 is put into savings the same day of each week, without fail, then the habit will develop. Once you have the saving habit (putting something away each week without thinking) you can more easily increase it. If $50 a week is not a difficult thing to do, ok, but if you selected that amount because you simply MUST put that much away, then you may very well fail at the attempt. The habit isn't there yet, and the reinforcement for the habit is missing. The benefit of saving isn't in your sights yet, truly.
Having parents upset is difficult, but it isn't like they will disown you right? Maybe you can get them to help you find a financial counselor, or a course for managing daily living regarding expenses? Good wishes!
