Just got a call from my bank's fraud division saying that they'd been informed that my card had been copied and compromised. I asked them how they knew and they just said they had various information sources?

Eak - on the one hand this freaks me out, but on the other hand I feel massively better that security is working and they verified that all the recent transactions on the card were mine, so no fraud had occurred. But it definitely spooked me.

They're rushing me a new card, which I should get tomorrow, but it's seriously making me reconsider the amount of on-line shopping I do.

I can see why you would be concerned, that does sound very scary, it's great that the security catches caught this before it turned into a big mess for you.

Such an invasion of privacy.....theft of any kind...it just plain stinks

I'm sorry that this happened to you, but so glad your credit card company has caught it. Are you 100% certain that it was an online purchase that compromised your card? It could have been one of the many thefts of hackers getting into companies databases and stealing the credit card numbers. That also happened to me with the TJ Maxx issues last year I think it was.

It's very possible your credit card company was being proactive in knowing there was theft from a store computer base and reissuing cards to their members who have shopped there in the past.

Wow very awesome credit card company for catching it before anything bad happened. Makes me question my bank even more, thinking about all the signatures of mine since going blind hahaha. Also, Brian signed a few of my checks with my name but in his writing. He's also signed his name and we've crossed it out, i initialed and signed. Its also happened ona couple crad receipts that friends have signed, and I've gotten not one word from my bank. And thts my debit card.....scary times, scary times.

Glad your bank was on the ball and got you feeling more secure. I don't think it's at all your fault for buying online/offline, I don't think that matters. I do do a lot of my credit card buying through paypal where it's offered so there's an added layer on top of my credit card.

Split Image,

I'm glad you were contacted about your card before you were taken advantage of. I'm the public safety chair for my neighborhood and have learned a lot about how that element of society wreaks havoc on the rest of us.

One of the high tech methods used by crooks is a "reader" that can be attached to a device such as an ATM. While you're innocently making a transaction the reader is recording all your pertinent info--account & pin numbers, etc.

I think it's worth mentioning that one should never give out personal or credit card information over the phone or the internet unless you initiated the inquiry.

I know exactly what you mean. That can be very stressful. Just last week my husband's credit card number was stolen and we're out a $1000. I don't know why people do things like that...especially around the holidays...
