"Restless leg syndrome, social anxiety disorder, female sexual dysfunction, celebrity worship syndrome - it seems that a new illness is invented every week, covering every potential quirk in human behaviour.

"Is the human condition becoming a medical condition?"

yep. the medicalization of things that never used to be considered medical conditions.

more money is spent on developing 'treatments' for 'erectile dysfunction disorder' than for maleria (where a child dies every 30 seconds).

ugh.

He really freaks out watching those legs go off on their own, eh?

Hey guys, last week I filled the "Minnesota 1943 Multi-phase Personality Questionnaire". It was in my native language though so I can't translate exactly what the questions were but one of them was:

"Sometimes I drop my handkerchief on the floor to get to know new people."

And you had to answer either "Yes" or "No".

What mental illness is that indicating? Haha.

There are people who would never allow any talk of anything that might be considered weak.
There was a time when many difficulties people face could not be spoken of.

Good post pachyderm. I have often thought the same thing. Your nose twitches and there prob is a "medical term" for it and a pill to take to stop the twitching. But then you will prob have many side effects from the pill. Might stop the twitching, but it might give you liver problems, heart problems, and headaches and stomach cramps. should i insert a lol here about now..

I think the difference was that people would speak of them to their priest or their family or their friends and get support for their difficulties that way. Not they are cast as 'medical disorders' where the strategy is to 'seek medical attention' and 'take what your doctor prescribes'.

A child dies every 30 seconds from maleria yet more money is spent on treating 'sexual dysfunction' (instead of considering people's perhaps unrealistic expectations and the role of porn etc in promoting them). How come? People will pay more for the medicalization of distress than they will for maleria treatments. Not at all to undermine anyones distress at all but one child every 30 seconds...
