This TV program is scheduled for Tuesday on PBS stations; in the east, at any rate, it seems to be at 9 PM:

"The Released" (#2713)
This year, hundreds of thousands of prisoners with serious mental illnesses will be released into communities across America, the largest exodus in the nation's history. Typically, mentally ill offenders leave prison with a bus ticket, $75 and two weeks worth of medication. Within 18 months, nearly two-thirds are re-arrested. In this follow up to the film "The New Asylums," FRONTLINE examines what happens to the mentally ill when they leave prison and why they return at such alarming rates. The stories of the released -- along with interviews with parole officers, social workers, and psychiatrists -- provide a rare look at the lives of the mentally ill as they struggle to stay out of prison and reintegrate into society.

Length: 56 min

Tishie, and others, you might try the Frontline Web site and see if they have a video now or in the future of this or other interesting programs:

Tonight's show is part II - when the inmates have served their time, and are released with $25 in their pocket and 2 weeks of medications. No job, no housing, etc.

The first part of this program was about mentally ill adults living in the US prison system, The New Asylum. It can be watched online here:

I watched the program last night. The people involved seemed to me to be in a lot more trouble than most of us here on Psych Central. Not an encouraging sight.

I saw part of it. I've heard about this type of thing before.

I think the level of functioning of those prisoners/mentally ill is probably much more typical of the population of the "mentally ill" than us high-functioning here on Psych Central. To me that poses the problem of how do you deal with that?
