I have had depression for awhile,3+years and even though recently my mood has improved my energy is lower.

Still sleeping 10-12 hours at night and naps if I do anything during the day.

I am worried that because I have depression that I will not be treated as a whole person. That is another topic for later post. My fear of stigma.

Since my depression has decreased my anxiety has increased.
I am second guessing myself and with the initial appointment tomorrow, I guess the worst that could happen is that nothing is found to relieve the depression/energy. Iwill then continue with T and Rx and lifestyle changes.

have a good night

That is an interesting question. I am scheduled in december (like they didn't have an earlier date? WTH? oh well) for my init meeting. I never connected the two. heart disease weight gain blah blah blah not depression per se.

hankster,

I had to ask my Pdoc for a referral, turns out you do not need one as this is a private clinic.
The Dr. I met today asked a lot of questions and then has recommended the sleep test - polysomnogram and the one where you nap 5 times sleep latency test.

I have decided to go ahead- and on Oct 17th I am going out for a sleep over.

The best part of the appointment is that he did not think it was sleep apnea.
The medications can have an impact on the results. But the tests should rule out sleep apnea.

I was worried that I would be treated as less than a person, and I have to say that the Dr said many people have untreated sleep issues and depression. I am not alone. He spends a lot of time in education of Pdoc and others about untreated sleep issues.

So you are having the consultation due to other health conditions?

This morning I googled depression and insomnia and read a few stories of people with depression getting great relief.

Yes, first my gp suggested it, not sure why. really not sure why he didn't suggest it 20 years ago! but he is an hour drive away so I had my pdoc refer me. now getting worried that with a dec init appt, the insurance carryover to the new year is going to be a problem. STRESS. I wouldn't think depression is a stigma as much as overweight is (i am). I would think they just ignore depression as imaginary, but would still look for actual sleep disturbances. Just that the depression relief would be more subjective, unlike say blood pressure. I just always called myself depressed, but that probably wasn't the accurate diagnosis, just more of a catch-all.
Thanks for this!

LOL: they have at least 8 hours recorded of me tossing and turning.

Not the frankenstein face with the heavy metal necklace.

Results are back and I do not have a sleep pathology- (apnea-narcolepsy)

My over quality of sleep was not deep, lot's of waking moments that I did not notice, and I did not dream until 6 hours into sleep.
So is was not my imagintion that I was not getting rest. When sleeping for 10 to 12 hours.

Now going to work with Pdoc and find ways to get some quailty sleep and dream time.
Zoloft is known to delay REM sleep.

The question is now how to decrease the sedating meds- clonazepam/ seroquel, and keep anxiety down so I can continue in therapy?

Sleep Dr-knows it is best to have Pdoc handle all meds, recommended book - six weeks to better sleep have on list at library, and he suggested sleep deprivation has been used to treat depression, I will pass on that for now, and I will use my light therapy in the evening so I can stay up past 8:00 pm.

thanks! as I was feeling quite anxious, but just thinking about 'the kids' as T calls them, and picturing them in T's office, and picturing bringing my home set with me, and remembering other times i'd been to hospital both as a child and as an adult when I didn't even have a transitional object to bring with me, and now I have 2 that go together - well, my anxiety really did diminish, and I heard T's voice in my head saying, what can you do to make this better for yourself? and I can't wait to tell him what I did.

the taxi was a LITTLE late coming to get me, but my check-in time was 8pm, so earlier in the day I made a reservation for a taxi to come at 7. I could have taken a bus, but the weather was so icy, I didn't want to take a chance on slip and fall. Plus it was like a $6 taxi ride, it's hardly a mile away. As the crow flies, it's like a quarter mile! Anyway, then I swapped back and forth between Monk and an Ingrid Bergman as cougar to Anthony Perkins movie!

Boy you definitely feel like Frankenstein's monster as they wire you up! At one point, they were working on my jaw, and I said, hey, are you marking me for a facelift too?

I probably should have brought a snack, I had a bit of a hard time falling asleep because I was a little hungry. But I wanted that evaluated on the study. Anyway, back home now, and I could use a nap!

It is quite the experience, I wish I had stayed at a friend over night for practice as it had been over two years since I slept in another bed than my own.

I think the worst part was having to use the washroom at some point in the night and I was worried about the loose end falling into the toilet. Now I know why the toilet was so close to a counter.

No matter the information I gained from the test has really helped, lowering clonazepam slowly until it will be a memory, then the sleep hygiene refresher, and less worries, is all adding up to better sleep. There is another AD that I could eliminate, but not yet, if ever.

And better coping energy, to fuel the skills I have been learning and practicing for the last 3 years.

the sleep doctor spends a lot of time educating other doctors about the link between depression and sleep, which he sees on a regular basis.

Have a good nap today Hankster

Look forward to hearing if you found the test useful for you.

I looked up the the test on the net and found it is a very complicated test with so many parameters.
the centre I went to, would have interrupted my sleep and set me up with a cpap if O2 levels went below a certain range. My O2 was fine for the most part.
