I had my 1st ECT treatment today. It was great compared to ECT 40 yrs ago at age 16. The dr said I had a long seizure at a low dose:-). I went back to work afterwards with no problems.
My questions are: Does memory loss increase with each treatment? How many treatments is average (he said 12)? Does the headache ever go away? Thank you |

I had ECT about ten years ago, so my response may be a little out of date, but I remember being given some ibuprofen right before I went in for my treatment and it helped with the headache. Not sure if your anaesthesiologist will allow it, since you have to take it orally, but it didn't bother me any. I didn't have any progressive memory loss, but did have a little short term memory loss just during the time I was receiving treatments. I had mine on an inpatient basis and my treatments were unilateral. Memory loss tends to increase with bilateral treatments, so if you're having electrodes on both sides, you could have more memory loss. And I think 12 treatments sounds about right. I was on track to have 12, but only had six because it worsened my dissociation.
I hope you find the treatments helpful and have a quick recovery. ![]()

I didn't have much memory loss at all; didn't find what loss I did have particularly progressive. Memory loss was just for very short term memory things. For instance, we went to a movie during my ECT treatments, and later I could vaguely remember going, but really didn't have memory for the plot/details. Not a big deal. Saw the movie again later. That kind of thing. I didn't lose memory for anything long-term like job skills, family memories, etc.

Had my second ECT today and feel okay
![]() Biggest problem with doing it outpatient is that you have to have a new IV started before each treatment:-(. So far so good, no huge difference in mood yet, but I am not your typically depressed patient. More looking for the will live, not try anything stupid and enjoy life. Hmmm I guess I do sound a bit depressed. Well here's hoping;-) |

Just my opinion but I totally don't think ECT should be allowed to still be accepted as a practiced treatment, looks so wrong.

It is such a simple procedure, I am in at 7 and out by 9. Hopefully it will help me handle my somewhat entrenched depression which I have fought for years with talk therapy, many medications and inpatient hospitalizations. I will keep you posted on the outcome ![]() |
