I want to get rid of memories from my past. I have had flashbacks, bad dreams and daily bad memories. Does anyone know if this form of treatment takes away past memories? If not does any medicine or any surgeries take away past memories. Does not matter about if they are good or bad I am willing to get rid of the good if I can get rid of the bad memories.
Thanks for your help |

I don't know about ECT or treatments but once you lose your memories you will find that you want them back. I have a type of amnesia that cost me my childhood from the age of 21 backwards. It's very difficult and not something I would want anyone else to have.

I am not a health professional but some members of a mood disorders therapy group that I used to go to had been diagnosed with PTSD (I don't know if this applies to you).
They reported that Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was beneficial as far as flashbacks, bad dreams and daily bad memories are concerned. Maybe discuss this option with your health care team?

ECT doesn't let you pick and choose what memories you want to lose. And actually, most people only have short-term memory loss surrounding the time around the treatments.
You can't unring your memory bell concerning your past. What you can do is see a good therapist who can help you work through those memories. Over time and with a lot of work, it can get much better. |
