Hi everybody. I know I started another thread on ECT but am curious if anyone has heard of the success rate for ECT. The psychiatrist I saw today said it is 90%. Could that be true? Has anyone ever heard anything like that?

I'd love it to be true. It gives me hope.

P.S. I just did a google search for "ECT success rate." The first page had websites reporting 70 - 83%. Seems the odds are in my favor. Fingers crossed here.

When I did it, an expert psychiatrist said it's about 98% effective for treatment resistant depression. Unfortunately, it didn't help me, but hurt my short term memory. I hope you find success with it!
Thanks for this!

It helped me. I was stuck in a deep episode and was hospitalized. Nothing was working so my pdoc ordered ECT treatments. It got me out of that episode and I was able to maintain with new meds and additional therapy. That was 2 years ago. Since then I have had another episode but not to the degree of the one that put me in the hospital.

It's my understanding that it's not a long term fix, but you can have additional treatments if needed.

When I tried it for treatment resistant depression, it did not help. It caused a lot of memory loss issues for me

'going to the dentist hurts more.'

it's a cliche', that statement above, but true in my experience.

i was scared on the 1st one. no need. they take very very good care of you. after the first one i as like 'what's the big deal? that's it?'

it also worked. i stopped after 12 unilateral. the doc wanted to do more, but i felt i had done enough. i might try it again.
Thanks for this!

They used ketamine as the anesthetic drug in my ''treatment,'' so I came out a bit out of it for a short period when I woke up, which at times was fun even thought its suppose to be a serious situation I think. It can be scary though because once you've experienced it once or twice you know that once you start to feel that ''feeling'' you will be knocked out in the next few seconds and there's nothing you can do about it. It did not work for me personally, but I heard stories about it working for others. One thing I will say though is that it was a safe environment and the people were nice.

I don't know the success rate of treatments. I do know that they are working for me. I can gladly say that as of right now I do not feel depressed. Nothing else has helped me with depression.

I am a little disappointed with one of the links psychcentral has for ect listed on this site. It was the most negative site I have ever been too. Somehow I figured out how to leave my own comments. I wonder if something positive will remain there or get deleted.

I have a lot of experience with ECT that I am willing to share with anyone who has questions.

attentionThis is an old thread. You probably should not post your reply to it, as the original poster is unlikely to see it.
