I think it's a bit odd that that guy says there are so many different types of depression and should be different types of treatments, but then he just validates the type he had and the things that helped him. It's no better than big pharma approach wise.

I personally don't think he has the whole story of depression, but I figure that all of those strategies are healthy for you anyway, so why not try? ![]() |

Well sure you can try, but I know from my own depression many years ago now, that it was a struggle to eat anything for example, or do anything, personally I could not have found the strength to exercise or cook and eat healthy. I'm glad that people are less affected by depression than that, then of course they can do all those things and see what happens.

"Get enough sleep"? Is this guy for real? When I was at my worst, I would sleep twice one hour. On a good night, I slept for an hour, lay awake for 4, and slept for another hour and a half. And it wasn't my alarm clock that woke me - it was the depression.

I'm always suspicious where the training is the same as the goal.
Like, do you have bad sleep. The solution, get good sleep! Or, do you have depression so you cannot move because of no energy. The solution, run around! Or, you cannot stop crying. The solution, smile! The GOAL rarely equals the WAY to go there. If only it was that easy. |

I can see both sides to this. Sometimes you don't have good sleep because you're depressed and cannot get good sleep. But sometimes you can get depressed because you don't follow a healthy sleep schedule. And then you get sleep deprived and cannot cope when you get hit with stressor, thus depression ensues. The average American lifestyle (for example) is not a very healthy one. So yes people are going to be more vulnerable to stress related illnesses.
In addition, yes it can be exhausting to cook properly when very depressed. That's where things like baby carrots, apples, pre-cooked chicken strips, can come in handy. It's a start. And fish oils are readily available. I recommend things like these to my patients with depression and it DOES help several of them. Obviously no one treatment is going to help everyone. A combo approach can also be beneficial. Using the meds to GET things into gear and then go from there. |
