Last year I had several treatments of ECT and it did nothing for me. Wondering if others have had the same experience?

I'm wondering if others who know you share your opinion that the treatment had no benefit. My experience with depression has been that while I didn't necessarily feel any better initially, those around me who knew me well, did give me encouraging feedback regarding their impressions of me. Eventually, my own thoughts and feelings caught up with what others were observing.

Hello,
My husband had ECT several years ago. He apparently was the most severe case of depression they had ever seen! And this was in a large metropolitan area with many research and teaching hospitals around.

He also said the same thing you said that it did not help. But he was able to pull out of the depression eventually. So maybe it did help. He now is able to keep the depression at bay thru medication. There is hope!

Yes, those around me have mentioned the difference.

Sometimes one has to go back for a tweak or maintenance.

You mentioned 'several' treatments. My understanding that a course of 8-12 treatments is the norm. Perhaps this may be why you don't feel any effect? Definitely mention this to your psychiatrist. Note, I don't think ECT is the sudden fix. We hope it will be but I think it instead puts us in a place to rebuild upon the Depression. I myself underwent a change in medication and some serious therapy in conjunction with the treatments.

I had ECT and felt it did nothing for me. My husband agreed that it did nothing for me. The doctors, however, felt that I improved and released me from inpatient care, so *shrugs*? Idk.

Thanks for your replies. It may work for some, I suppose, but I got nothing out of it. I know sometimes it helps to have some done for maintenance. I think I'll pass.

ECT helped me with my suicidal thoughts. I do it every 3 weeks as maintenance. I have been doing it close to 3 yrs and besides 1 episode of suicidal action I have been fairly stable.

ECT did not help me, in fact it made me worse.
I now suffer from considerable long and short term memory loss.
Supposedly, long term loss shouldn't happen, but I have talked to may patients lately who are ending up with long term loss.
I can't remember my childhood, my wedding, my kids early years, the list goes on and on

I have. I have had 16 treatments so far and they have helped a little. I can function now. Before I couldn't even function a month ago
