Hi can melatonin cause increase of anxiety ?
my pdoc preserbe this and i am not a fan of it |

It is a rare side-effect but it can happen. I was on it for a bit and it hyped me up so much with anxiety I could not use it to sleep.

the first night i can get to sleep fine but the following day in the afternoon i started to get a panic attack out of the blue and last night i had a hard time getting to sleep

I don't get the anxiety (though valerian, in the same line of natural/over the counter sleep aids, gives me anxiety to the point of paranoia) but it does make me very groggy the next day, almost like being hung over... so I save it for extreme circumstances when I know I can sleep in the next day! It works well when I'm adjusting to other time zones. The natural remedy board might know more, too.

My son was taking it a few years ago and was taking it for more than a year. He started out taking the .3 strength and one was helping him. At that time in my life, I did what the dr said with no questions asked.
I came across an article on melatonin and became very concerned. Melatonin is produced by our bodies at night time to help us sleep. What was going to happen if my son was taking oral melatonin? I was afraid that it was going to mess up his body producing it on its own. The dr told me that that would not happen. I listened. His dosage gradually worked its way up to 10 of the .3 tablets to help him sleep. I decided at that point that it was not a good thing. He quit taking it. He does struggle with anxiety and has for several years. The melatonin wasn't the cause of it, but my concern was his body's hormone balance. It certainly could have contributed to it as the dosage he was taking went up.

It worsened my OCD and OCD is an anxiety disorder so I would say yes.

According to some, the liposomal form of melatonin can be a powerful brain detox agent. If one takes a high enough dose, can mobilize toxins in the brain, which could trigger various symptoms.

I believe this is a legit concern. Have read that taking it for too long can possibly weaken the body's ability produce it on its own. Seems most modern people are like cave dwellers, getting little sun and tons of artificial blue light, which destroys melatonin, and this is the root of many problems. Most docs do not seem to understand this and just do the usual superficial pill pushing.

I don't think that I'd use the word anxiety to describe how I typically feel from taking melatonin, but I will say that increased irritability and a strong worsening of feelings of exhaustion (similar to what anais_anais described) are part of what I experienced the day after taking melatonin the last few times that I took it. Taking melatonin definitely affected me in a negative way, and seeing that other members here have described negative effects that they noticed in connection with having taking melatonin, it makes sense to me that increased anxiety is something that could possibly occur as a result of taking melatonin. Even if the increased anxiety that you've been experiencing might be related to factors other than the melatonin that you've been taking, I'd recommend reporting the increase in anxiety that you've been noticing to your doctor. Take care.

melatonin gives me nightmares. The one thing that I learned about it though less is more. 3mg is plenty and it also builds up in your system over time which might be causing the anxiety
