Not at all! I've had ECT treatments in the past to address depressive episodes so severe, that I was barely eating. It was the only treatment that worked at the time, I had tried countless medications and therapy before.
There was some temporary memory loss and temporary lessening of cognitive function (it was harder to remember what I was reading, for example), but they did pass. There are some things I completely forget and will never get back, fortunately they are not important memories. The procedure is very safe. You are put to sleep and they induce a small seizure in a very controlled environment. If I had to choose between being stuck at rock bottom and doing ECT again, I would choose ECT in a heartbeat. It is a shame you have such an ancient view of a treatment that has saved many lives. It is certainly not like the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". ![]() |

It's very safe. It's much more effective than medication. The short-term memory loss is no big deal (I used to forget where the dining room was). Personally, I wouldn't do it again. I had 3 trials which didn't work, The last 2 I became a little confused and stopped after 5 treatments. I didn't like going under anesthesia 2-3x a week.

Thats why I think itsbarbaric they are putting you under which has risks. Then they make you have aseizure. It 2018 you would think psychiatric medicine would be better. I have had it doneandwould never again. In the US they can actually make you do it which is crazy.

As for the inducing of a small seizure, consider it a reboot of the brain like you would reboot a computer. It is a safe and contained seizure, unlike grand mal seizures one may experience with epilepsy. You seem to be unfortunately uneducated on the subject of ECT. I hope someday your view will change. |

I just dont think dying from anaesthesia isarisk I want to take andthe fact that in the US they can force you to take that risk is awful. If it was alife saving procedure that would be different.

I have been having ECT for the past 3 yrs. NOTHING works as well and yes I still take medication. I have chronic suicidal thoughts and unfortunately actions, ECT is the only thing that works to curb them. The anesthesia is minimal. Your under for about 5-10 mins tops. I can't think of a less "barbaric" treatment.

There is supposedly a new therapy that does the same thing and doesnt involve a seizure or anaesthesia called transcranial magnetic something. Seems alot less scary to me. Last edited by Rive1976; Mar 27, 2018 at 06:08 PM. |

Yes but less effective. I have my treatment in the morning and I’m back to work an hour later. I can’t say I wouldn’t try rTMS but I’m very happy with the ECT. Good luck in your journey.
