My old T tried to get me to go to a 30 day residential treatment facility. My new T thinks this is a good idea as well. Has anybody ever done this? What are your thoughts?

Dear Crook32,

I was once in a 14 day residential treatment facility and it helped me quite a bit with the issues I was struggling against. I hope people with more experience than me will have helpful ideas and insights for you. In residential treatment I had access to many mental health professionals and other who brought uniquely helpful ideas to me.

Sincerely yours, Yao Wen
Thanks for this!

I have not been but my T sometimes works at one. He speaks very positively about the place and the work they do. He enjoys seeing how much clients can grow and heal with an opportunity like that.

I was in residential treatment centers for 4 years as a teenager. One place was decent but it wasn’t in a very good neighborhood and I was in a dark place mentally. One was amazing and I give them credit for saving my life. The last one sucked and the staff were abusive and the kids were bully’s.

I was in a progressive residential treatment facility from March 2010 to November 2014

The community aspect was the most beneficial for me. I also met my therapist there and we've continued working together after we both left the facility (he was the clinical director but left to open his own practice and I left a few months later to continue working w him on the outside)

Some aspects are definitely challenging but treatment is often abt coming out of ur comfort zones

I wouldn't be alive today if I had not been accepted to that program.
