My hamster is dead. Its sort of my fault.

He has a cage, which is placed inside a plastic storage container modified with holes and such (this way he has more room, he can come out of his cage and has sand for sand baths, food dish, stuff to chew)

I left the lid slightly off the top of the container last night without realizing...you see where this is going?

The top cage door was up too which i did not realize..and the angle angled it right to the top of the container.

He got out.

I have a cat.

And, we found him this morning..looking very gristly

I am SO GUILTY.

Oh No. Don't be so hard on yourself. This was just an unfortunate accident. I am sorry about your hamster.

thanks Sabrina.

I think im mostly guilty because i know he must have had a painful death. I should have known better because when i "showed" the cat the hamster when we got him, its lucky i was holding him because the cat did lunge for him.(which is why i "showed" him - because I wanted to see what would happen and whether he would be nasty to him or whatnot, in an environment where I could protect him and just close my hands over him if anything happened) I should have known I should have known. Thank God Jer wont find out, i will just get a new one..Jer has not seen him yet so that is good.

You know - this is odd, but I think i would almost feel better if the cat had EATEN him. At least then I could say "oh, well cats eat mice, its what they do" but he didnt even.. he just clearly killed him, and probably played with him in that awful cat way.

Blah.Maybe next time I will go for a rat - bigger, and more able to defend themselves.

I'm sorry to hear about your hamster but you shouldn't feel guilty.
If it's any small comfort, when cats catch small rodents the mice / hamster etc usually seem to die either of stress / heart attack before anything more bloody happens so he prob wouldn't have suffered.

Thanks for this!
