I have two cats and a bird. One cat is estimated to be about 13-14 years old, she was a feral cat, she use to live in our garage, she is full black with a half of tail and short legs. She is extremely vocal, and moody and doesn't like people, she picks and chooses who can love or and who cant. Her name is Sabrina.

I also have a cat the is a total opposite of her, he is a tabby estimated to be between 5-7 years old. I adopted him from a shelter. He is the sweetest cat I have ever had and been around. He loves cuddling with me, head butting, purring, giving kisses, and playing in boxes and bags and when I get upset, he always meows at me and cuddles, purring away, even licking my tears off my face and so on. His name is Tango.

I have my cats help me a lot with my daily struggles, even my bird does who loves to sing and head bang with me LOL. His name is Sydney,

Since I really dont have any friends, my pets are my best friends and make me extremely happy

Animals are very therapeutic my cat Tango particularly is very therapeutic for me

1 cat. pain in the *** most of the time...but i love him. He takes the edge off the day sometimes, and I'm grateful he's around.

Having him has helped my short-fused temper, too. It's awesome.

I had a cat that was usually aloof and did not want to be petted. His brother was a total smooch, but not he. However when I was depressed and lying down drowning in darkness fairly quickly that cat would get on top of me, plop himself squarely over my chest and start purring. You know how hard it is to maintain the state of abject misery, of wishing self into death with a CAT PURRING RIGHT OVER YOUR HEART? If I pushed him off he would come back! And that was the only time he did it. If I was happy, or just relaxing watching tv, he would not be interested.

He died young. He wasn't too healthy. Perhaps he absorbed too much of my darkness. (Later I learned that according to certain native american shamanistic teachings the animals are receivers of energy. They soak up our emotions, our pain, our sickness. That's what they do.)

Myself I have a 5ish yr old siamese that has pulled me out of sliding further into the funk as the going gets worse.
Yep, don't know what I would do without my Aikido.. david
I think cats and dogs are very good for anyones emotional well being which is probably why theyre so popular among people with issues. I LOVE siamese cats. I have two siamese, a calico, and a tortie. I love them all.

I love my cats. They are so independent. I don't have to worry about them as much as I would a dog. They are such a comfort when I am depressed, and so funny when I need a good laugh.

I grew up with dogs, can't afford them now! Have had cats in the past, my 1st behaved more like a dog, I thought maybe it was because I didn't know how to treat a cat? But all three cats ate like cats. Then about 4 years ago I started volunteering at a shelter, I ended up working with cats because of the heat, and cats have AC! Then one day this big guy, huge, an English Blue guy, gets up puts his paws, one on each side of my neck looks me straight in the eye. It's like he's telling me to take him home with me, now! Maybe it's becouse he is a guy, but when he eats he gets food on the wall, the floor, he's picky. He only likes cardboard sratches boards, and we have trails of little peices of cardboard are all over the place. He owns the house. BUT, he knows when I'm down, he knows when I need to sit down he butheads me into a chair and sits on me, did I mention huge! His large green eyes always captivate me and calm me. At 6years young he still plays with mice, and feathers. I could not now imagine getting though the days without him. Wish I knew how to post a pic on here, he's got attitude. Yup, I love my cat, if he really is a cat an not an angel.

I had to lock my guy out of the bedroom so I could sleep, he would jump up at random times and check on me to see if I was awake, or maybe he was checking my breathing? So anyway he kept trying to dig his way in under the door! He's used to it now, but still doesn't like it, hates it more when I sit in the bath tub, keps checking on me, that crazy woman he owns that goes and delibertly sits in water. Hot smelly water!

I love all animals mostly I guess but I am true cat person. Any size, shape colour. They are very sensitive beings I think. They contemplate and watch. They have many sides to them too. Me and my kitty have a knowing. We are best buddies and I say he is my angel and my boy. I have noticed and I dont know what the connection is.

I reckon there is something in the cats and mental illness thing - mine certainly keep me nice and happy a lot of the time
Has everyone seen Simon's cat? Have a look at the videos here: http://www.simonscat.com/
If you own a cat, you can relate!
Thanks for this!

I cannot help but hope that this is not true for my kitties' sake. But I know what you mean and have had that feeling before, and have even referred to my cat, as my dreamcatcher. I like to think that my dark thoughts pass through her, and that she is better able to pass them on unaffected by them since the issues and troubles of the human world are of little consequence to the cats (hope this doesn't sound completely crazy/stupid). When my other one (my baby boy, even though he's over a year old now he's still my baby kitty to me) jumps up next to me and curls up for a nap, I really do stop thinking the bad thoughts that plague my awareness most of the day. I'm not completely happy, but I stop thinking and dwelling, and just enjoy the cuddle time.

I am sorry that you lost your cat, before his time. No matter how long ago, I really do miss all the kitty (and doggy) friends I have had.

On a different note, I think people with depression and other mental issues find some comfort in caring for an animal who has no judgments about you and accepts you as you are, I know I have. I also wonder if there is some correlation between being able to relate to and care for an animal, and just feeling things deeply, perhaps because of, or causing depression. Don't know how to explain it, but I am thinking of how some people don't understand the bond we have with our pets, or even those who don't understand that it is wrong to abuse animals. Maybe many of us who suffer from mental problems tend to be more sensitive to others, including cats and dogs and other animals. It's just a guess based on my own experience and perception.

In any event, I love many animals, but I have just felt that cats are truly special and unique somehow, especially in their character. I feel as though my kitties deserve nothing less than the best in life and I am so blessed to have them in my own life.

This is my Devon Rex. Shes crazy smart for a cat (and I've had a lot in my days). She plays fetch, and can even rollover on comment most of the time...she is just the sweetest forever-baby ever. I'm allergic to all cats but she is actually fantastic to deal with allergy wise. Great pets, I don't think I'd ever own another breed of feline. Here are some pics of her:

My dog is relentless. If she wants something, she will not stop until she gets it.
