Ugh!!!

I found out today that my cat has tapeworms. YUCK!!! I went to the vet and they gave me some medication to give her. It's two pills...one she gets today, and the other one in two weeks.

Anyone who has ever tried to give a pill to a cat knows that it can be a daunting and painful experience for both cat and owner. The pills are medium sized tablets and the vet said the best way to get her to take it was to coat it with butter and get her to open her mouth and put it in the very back of her throat.

It was sooo horrible! I did it....but it took about 20 minutes of attempting to get her to swallow it. She kept spitting it out. I finally had to wrap her in a towel and set her in the sink to keep her from squirming away.

I'm still shaking from it. I am sure she is too. The look in her eyes really triggered me. She had this look of fear and confusion, like she just wanted to know why....? My father used to harm animals....I remember seeing the same look in their eyes. I feel horrible now. I just want to love on her but she is still hiding under the bed. I feel like crying.

I know I did what was best for her and that she needed the medication...but I keep seeing that look in her eyes and it breaks my heart to know that I'm the one that put it there. I'm sad that it had to be such an ordeal for her. The only thing that allows me to feel even remotely okay right now is that I was doing what was best for my kitty...even if she didn't understand it.

I hope she forgives me....

She forgives me!!!

She's come to cuddle with me at the computer just like always. She's such a good girl. I still feel bad about having to stress her with the medicine...but I feel better knowing that she is okay with me.

Sometimes I am just plain silly.

I'm glad she's forgiven you. I know it can be difficult treating animals because sometimes they don't realize what we're doing is for the best.

Hon, you're not silly. It's hard when we have to do something for one of our animals that's best for them but they aren't going to like. I'm glad she got over her fear and is cuddling with you!

Awww - as someone who has had to medicate my kitty multiple times i totally understand....the good thing is that they do forget easily and their love supersedes whatever they may have felt at the moment.
since you have to go through this again in 2 weeks....a suggestion....my girlfriend wraps her cat's pills in turkey (lunch meat) to give him his pills. He loves the turkey and swallows the pill right down.
Good luck and i hope you and kitty are feeling better!
Thanks for this!

HI--In my "cat gullet" thread, I talk about some treats the pills are stuck in that work as a method for our kitty!
