I've had my pitbull, Matt, for about 1-2 weeks now and I realized that he gets this green gunk in his eyes. I clean them but it comes back. Could it just be allergies or an eye infection? He's so important to me, I just wanna give him the best I can.

I'd say a visit with the vet would be a good idea. Make an appointment for a check up and ask the doctor about the eye gunk.

Most likely allergies. But, if he hasn't been to a vet since you've brought him home, then a vet visit is a good idea anyway. If it is just environmental allergies, your vet can tell you the correct dosage for over the counter allergy meds, as well as which ones your dog can take.

Because the color of the gunk is green, it is likely a bacterial infection of some kind. My vote is to take him in. He'll probably get some drops and I'll bet it won't be expensive. Let us know!

chances are he picked up something from the shelter, rescue store where ever you got him from + allergies..(new food, new living area, seasonal allergies are awful this time of year) and stress.
vet visit...for any new pet is a must. get him checked..make sure he is up to date on his shots. a must. get him licensed. another must. if he is old enough make an appt to get him fixed because really unless he is a champion at westminster he should not be having puppies (or are you as a responsible breeder willing to care for all the offspring for their entire lifespan which is what a reputable breeder does) chances are it is all of the above. some antibiotics, & over the counter allergy stuff should clear it up right away... now is a great time to get a new dog. many local park systems offer low cost dog training classes for the summer..mine does..7 1 hour classes..for $50 for example. can't beat that! better & cheaper than what the big chains offer training with any dog is important but with a pittie you especially want your guy to be the best damn pittie the world has ever seen. they can be gentle sweet dogs..used to be nanny dogs...so i am not bashing them...but they have to be raised right & come from good stock (actually like all dogs) get him socialized, feed him right...good food, lots of love. & may he live to be 100 & be the best dog you will ever know. stumpy ![]() |

We have a pitbull with a white face and she permanently has gunk in her eyes, though not green. She has sensitive eyes and the elements make it worse.
A trip to the vet would be a good idea. |

Eyes issues can progress quickly, so getting him in the sooner is paramount. Don't put this off.

Well turns out that my mother won't take him. I've been asking for the past few days and trying to explain it to her, but she just won't listen. She says it's too expensive even after I offered to pay for everything. Ugh.. I'll probably have to ask my sister to take him. She'll understand, she an animal person.

I agree that it's probably allergies BUT drainage from a pet's eyes could also result from infections elsewhere, namely teeth or ears. Also there are several problems that would mean the dog is uncomfortable - like possibly his eyelashes are rubbing against his eyes, his eyes (even though they're producing mucus) could very well be too dry which can cause permanent vision impairment, conjunctivitis, lots of things and the dog has no way to help himself, he is totally dependent on his owner to find out what's going on and help him get relief.
I consider myself conservative when it comes to treating pet health concerns but it seldom plays out that waiting ends-up saving money with the veterinarian. Usually if you can nip something in the bud it'll actually be more economical and the pet will be spared more discomfort.
