Purchased this pig the other day. So far he has settled in well and is extremely convincing in the role. That other pig next to him is also a pig.

Pig might be dirty for a reason. Maybe help itches or may stop bugs from bothering pig. Or maybe some other pig make this one look bad. The heat might have bothered pig so cooler place was dirty. Maybe if pig dirty not Grade A pork so pig will live longer!

Nice looking pigs! Hahaha!!! I live in the country. My fiance talked (once or twice) about getting a pig, but even though I'm an animal lover -- he wants one to raise for slaughter! -- I said NO WAY!!! We have chickens and I love each and every one, 24 in all! Have never killed one to eat! I can't do that!

buddyandcharlie, I understand somewhat. I could never raise a pig or any animal with the intent to kill it. I kind of want to have some pet chickens in the future...I discovered a few months ago, there's a magazine called Chickens (published by the people who brought you Hobby Farms). I have bought a couple of issues but haven't had time to read them yet...I'm hoping it's not for raising chickens to eat. The cover seems to suggest caring for them, so I'm assuming I won't freak out when I read them. But before I can have chickens, I need a bigger home and land where I'd be allowed to raise them.

I think the pig would be offended if we didn't taste him.

ah I love pigs... they are lovely animals... I did some work on a farm and they were my favourites ... when it was feeding time, all their snouts in the trough... they were very funny

Yes they have no manners when it comes to dinner time. I like to unload all the food and just look down on them feeling superior.

We understand. It's your coping method for low self-esteem.

a few years ago my brother whom lived with me at the time bought a little pig to raise for future food. Well big mistake was naming him. Boomer was a big ole pet! He would follow me everywhere and would not stay in his pin! sorry to say I could not eat him. we didn't make him a pet but he made himself a pet lol. miss that little guy!

Oh, that's so sad, bebop! My dad once told me of a pig his family had gotten when he was little, and they got attached. When they killed the pig, no one could eat it. I just don't understand how you can make something a pet (or get attached to it) and then kill it.

Maven, I too would like to have a few chickens...for eggs. I doubt I can do that, though, since I live within town limits in a neighborhood. There is also a website I looked at recently which describes the characteristics of each breed of chicken, telling which are tamer, can be handled, etc., as opposed to mean ones.
Thanks for this!

I know, Maven...I've never been around animals being slaughtered or butchered for food, though I've heard oldtimers talk about it with great nostalgia! Those people lived by what they raised, and the meat was certainly better and safer than what we buy at the supermarkets! We are sanitized from the process, getting our meats in nice plastic wrapped packages, eh! Of course, I agree with you. I could never eat a pet! but I couldn't condemn anyone for raising chickens, pigs, or beef for food.

seeker, I don't condemn anyone for raising animals for food (I eat meat), but I'm appalled when they make the animal a pet first.

As for that Chickens magazine, I flipped through an issue at the bookstore, and it had recipes for chicken dishes!!! Aaaghhh! No, not a big surprise, but I was just hoping there was a magazine devoted to the love of chickens as pets. Disappointment!!!
