Not me, the dog! Haha. My mini schnauzer is 7 and has normal skin, but it's gotten worse this winter. He doesn't itch really bad, but he DOES itch. I gave him an oatmeal bath today, but didn't keep the oatmeal on for that long bc I didn't want him to be cold. I had to give him a bath to give him a clip, or else I wouldn't risk making his skin more dry....

Any ideas on home remedies? I do give him Blue Buffalo food, and it's one of the best, natural foods that I can give him. I also give him salmon treats every day for his coat. Not helping so much :/

When our dogs get dry skin we sprinkle a little olive oil or good canola oil over their food and it seems to clear it up.

I work at a petstore and did you notice a change when you started the food he's on? There are also anti itch spray you can give also avoid bathing as it does make the skin dryer. You should only be bathing your dogs once every two months or so. The oatmeal is good the bathing is just something that's not going to do a great job with it. Like I said go to a local pet store and buying anti-itch spray. It will help sooth rather then dry. Also if it's the food find something with a very limited ingredient diet. Blue is good, but it does have high ingredients that can effect your dogs skin.

Also do the salmon treats have limited ingredients? There is actually salmon oil you can put on a dogs food. Which is much healthier.

Moraganal has good advice there. I don't know much about treating dry skin in animals, but I'd call a vet and see if I could get some free over-the-phone advice.

Good call guys! I got the salmon stuff and will try that for a few weeks first. It's actually getting a little better with the warmer weather and next week will be even warmer!

BREWER'S Yeast works so well ! It is not only full of B vitamins and minerals it is good for their skin, their vision and also energy level. When I worked in Nutrition I would have people come in an tell me how this helped so much. It can be found in bulk at most of the market's that carry health foods. We use the flakes. There is a finer ground. put it in their food, they grow to love the taste. Honest.
warm thoughts.
