Seriously, my cat the past 3 nights has almost killed me. Two glade plug-ins and 2 huge candles I get from the vet meant to fight animal odors and I still think he won.

Anyone else experience this? I think he is downstairs right now because it smells nice in here with just my calico and me.
Thanks for this!

Hahaha...this cracked me up. I have never experienced this. Although I have friends who've had animals like that. Best of luck.

I haven't ever lived with that problem, either. I've had dogs, but I guess I didn't have gassy dogs. My bird doesn't fart, as far as I know. I feel for you, though!

Do you treat your cat against internel parasites regularly? What does his or her poop look like? Did you change the cat food? Does it go outside and eats animals? Does the cat seem healthy otherwise? Many reasons for causing gas are possible...

You don't want to know what his poop looks like...he has a chronic colon disease he has had for years that I treat him for. (And no, he never goes outside and he always eats the same food...he has to eat certain food for his kidney issues. So no, my cat is nothing close to normal. It's a miracle he is still alive and happy and almost 12. He just needs lots of extra special care.)

The gas is a new thing; I have a call into the vet but I assume he will tell me it's just a side effect of his colon problems, which no one else really wants to hear more about (promise)...but thank you for asking and your concern. I probably should have started my initial post by saying he had a chronic colon disease but was genuinely interested in animal gas as a general phenomenon (like, if this happens with other pets, too).
Thanks for this!

Aww, poor you and Al! I imagine dogs might be more prone than cats because I know when I had a dog I would catch her eating all kinds of stuff outside, ugh.

Do you suppose pets have a network of friends (such as dogs at the dog park) who they're complaining to about YOUR gassy-ness all the time? Gossiping about your pet, embarrassing them about their bodily functions! For shame! For shame, all of you!

I think my cat just texted his friend that I almost knocked him off the bed because I didn't know he was there! Eeek!
It's a pet conspiracy!

Did you by any chance change his diet? Some pet foods have a habit of causing this, Pedigree definitely being a big one for dogs.

I know how painful gas can be even for me at times and would be concerned about the discomfort for the cat. I know for dogs there is a chewable equivalent to human Gas X that they can be given and wonder that there is something for the cat. I would call the vet and talk to them about it, because this could be really uncomfortable not just for you in smelling you out of the house , but painful for him as well. Also because it could be an indication of a change in his system, that he may need to change his diet, becaues if he has not gotten into anything, it could indicate that he can not processes the food he is getting now due to progression of the colon disease.

Al's toxic gas is episodic. We live on a farm. He eats anything that fits in his mouth. Some times he eats things that create stinky gas. I remind myself - this too will pass!

Maven, you remind me of an incident with my Mom's cat years ago. I was stiing on the sofa and passed gas. It made noise when I did. Kitty came over and sniffed near my seat on the sofa, checking out the sound. He got a whiff of the gas, glared at me and jumped down from the sofa. I should have turned to a pile of ash from the look he gave me!

I called and am waiting for a return call. His poop is the same as always...as I posted earlier, no one wants to know more about that. But unless his gas can be treated with something like Gas X, there is probably little I can do to prevent it with a change in his food...I don't think changing his food would have any effect, as his system can't change much more (ie, it can't get any worse or else he would show signs of being extremely uncomfortable.) He also purrs and eats and acts like his normal self during these episodes. He processes his food as well as any cat can with the disease he has at the stage it is in. Thus all the care I give him. I would also say he probably is experiencing LESS pain as he is getting the gas out and it is not being trapped. That is when I always have pain.

No, he is on the same diet for his kidneys he has been on for years. He does have a chronic colon disease I mentioned a bit earlier in this post, however. Thanks!

If the odour is rotten egg type, then change in diet might be needed. Being unable to digest high sulphur content protein in the diet could cause this.

I had a beautiful boxer for years and I loved him dearly. But he was truly a gas bag. He would find any person and con them into part of their burger or hotdog eat it then
sit down and give silent but deadly a new name. To top it of after the fart from where?
he would look at the person that gave him a treat and turn his butt to them as he walked away from the smell. Dogs are able to enjoy their tricks

Can you try a grain-free diet and see if that may help? If you can find one that works for the kidney issue?

Not sure how it works with cats, but I've heard humans can get gassy if they have issues with their gall bladders.

I would definitely call the vet in on this one if it continues. Sure hope your kitty feels better soon!!

Nope he can't eat grain free, and my vet said it's just his condition. He did say he was going to call the pet food company since they supposedly changed the formulation of his food and ask them about what they did to it, but my vet says all kinds of crap he never follows through on. I am going to have to remind him.

My cat has been much better recently, though! Thanks!

Mine has to stay on the kidney diet...he's had 2 kidney stone operations and another operation you don't want to know the details of, but it's to make the stones pass easier if he has anymore, since one got stuck when I was not home and we had to go to the ER vet STAT when I did get home since he was blocked.
But thanks for the info, glad your doggy got fixed with the food.
