Had a HUGE scare with Al today. As the farrier was leaving he accidently drove over Al. I didn't see what happened but heard the thump and Al howling. I came flying out of the barn. Farrier came out of his truck like a jack-in-the-box. Al was all curled up screaming. I just kept saying "ohmigawdohmigawdohmigawd..." Poor farrier was white as a sheet. We slowly and carefully checked Al over. No blood. No bones that felt broken. I palpated all over his body and he didn't react. I finally persuaded him to stand up and walk. He hobbled when he walked, but he walked. He is an old man and hobbles most of the time lately.

A while later he got up and tottered off to the house. He managed to get up the steps and into the house later in the day. Like I said, he's a stiff, achy old man. Climbing steps has been hard for him for about a year. Tonight he's crashed in the living room sleeping. I gave him a doggie asprin this afternoon. I'll give him another one at bedtime. I spent some time a few times through the day sitting and cuddling him.

I'll see how he is tomorrow, but I think we dodged a bullet today.

I feel worse for my farrier tonight than I do Al. The farrier is also a good friend and is a tender hearted soul. He's blaming himself for not checking to be sure the dogs were out from under his truck before he started to leave. Me? I think it was an accident. He would never, ever, EVER intentionally hurt an animal, plus he knows how attached I am to Al.

for Al.....

for farier/friend

Al's an old man. I keep thinking he doesn't have much longer with us. I'm glad today was not the day though!

Hi LL! That sounded frightening!! What an experience!!

Wow. I sure hope Al is doing better tomorrow. Sounds like he got clipped pretty hard. Like with people, he might be a little more sore tomorrow. Best of luck!!
Thanks for this!

Oh my, quite a scare! I do hope he is ok. How is he today?

He may not have any broken bones but would be concerned about internal soft tissue injuries and bleeds. Do you know the signs for this and how to check his gum tissues. I can post this if you want or PM you, just let me know.

I will be hoping for the best meanwhile. (((Al & LL)))))

Thanks everyone.

Fresia, that's really sweet to offer to teach me how to check for internal injuries. I know what to look for and he doesn't have any of the signs.

Al is sore today, which is to be expected, but otherwise seems OK. He's a little more stiff and gimpy than usual, but otherwise OK. Food and water go in one end and come out the other.

This is the second big scare we've had in six months. I hope we don't have anymore!
Thanks for this!

if he has a tendency to lie under or beside parked cars it may be worth putting him indoors when cars arrive so this doesn't happen again

I'm sorry this happened. Did your dog get knocked down or did the wheels go over him. I think its better to take him to the vet because he could have internal injuries. He could be in pain.

Lynn, a back wheel went over him. He was laying is soft sand when the whell went over him. I think that kept him form being seriously hurt. Trust me, I will take him to the vet at the first sign anything is wrong with him. My vet is closed on the weekend. I'm reluctant to pay the high fees the emergency vet would charge when there's nothing apparently wrong with him.

Will do Sorta-fairytale. I sat with him on the floor for a bit this afternoon petting him. I'll give him some more petting and tell him it's from you.

He is still a bit sore, but doggie asprin seem to be taking care of the aches. He's an arthritic old man so I guess I should say he is almost back to his normal achiness.

I'm OK now. I was worried about him Sunday and Monday, but calmed down since he seems to be getting back to normal.

I'm glad he seems ok. I understand not wanting to pay high vet bills, but I think it's a good idea to have a pet checked out, just in case. Hugs to him and you!

He is back to his usual old man self. He's enjoying all the extra attention he's getting. Thanks for asking.
