the past 2 days ive seen what look like larvae in my cats water bowl. i googled it and they look like indian meal moth larvae. they seem dead though i guess bc they are in the water? anyway i saw 2 yesterday and 1 this morning. ive cleaned the water bowl and put fresh water in it. i checked my cats butt and his poop and no sign of worms. why are they getting in there? its really gross. i hate maggot looking worms. they arent that big. they are white with a black or brown head.

what should i do?? any clues on how to stop this?? its really grossing me out.

My first action would be to take a poop specimen and one of the little critters to your vet. Good luck--that would give me the heebie jeebies!

We used to get larvae like that when I lived in Saudi Arabia. My mom started storing things in air-tight tubs or the freezer. Sounds like yours hitched a ride in with the kitty food. Pretty gross! I hope the kitty is ok!

He probably did eat some, but since insects are considered yummy by cats, he most likely assumed you were giving him a thoughtful treat. Lol I can't count the number of times we found larvae in our food. After a while we would just say, "Oh, worms again. Better eat something else."

What brand of food was it? I'll tell my ex about it so he can avoid that brand for their cats.

It's amazing what we can eat & survive......our bodies are made with digestive enzimes that usually destroy almost anything alive that might get in there except things like giardia & things like that....cats & dogs are even better....remember, cats normaly are micers & they kill & eat what was a live mouse with whatever crud was on the mouse, lice or whatever.....ok, I'm even grossing my own self out here.....

I don't think I would really worry about that larva.....clean as much as possible & it will finally either metamorph into the moths & you will have them flying around your apartment or they will die from having nothing to live off of.

I struggle with the fruit flies & the fruit fly larva when I accidentally leave my fruit around too long without eating it first. I haven't died.....haven't even been sick over the last 7 years except for a couple of days here & there.

I wouldn't get really stressed about it but do the best job cleaning & leave it at that. Shoot, even in a closed air tight container, my flour gets weavles in it......we can't protect ourselves from everything & those things won't kill us.....they just gross us out.

Weavels come prepackaged before we have even bought food stuffs. They don't get into things, they are already there. Buy not buying massive amounts of food stuffs like flour, cat food, and oats we can keep food stuffs for a shorter period and lessen the possibility of giving the little suckers time to hatch. Keeping grain food in the freezer until you need to use it stops them from germinating.

Your cat probably thought he was getting a crunchy treat. MMMMM protein.
