I am thinking of Charlie. I find it strange that a cat can stop urinating just like that, with no confirmed diagnosis. Maybe it's more common than I thought.
Thanks for this!

I hope Charlie is doing better. I just found this thread. I feel bad for him, but I'm also left with the impression that you're a very good kitty-mom

Charlie has urinary stones (or else urethral plugs, either way...they cause the same issue). When one (or more) partly or totally block a male cat's urethra, he can't urinate.

The following is an excellent article from Cornell's vet school, particularly under "Urethral Obstruction."

So the vet called this morning. Charlie is doing okay. They are leaving the catheter in for 3 days to let his pu sight heal more. They are being wonderful and working with me on the finances.

Chloe seems a little confused still about where Charlie is, but I talk about him every day with her to hopefully help them keep their connection.

Thank you everyone for your support through this whole ordeal. It means so much to me.

That's great news, googley! And it sounds like you found a really good vet to work with. That's nice to have in your back pocket.

Googley, we had a cat who kept getting blocked by stones. He had the surgery to move the bladder and shorten the ureter. Sorry, can't remember what it's called. He lived to be 16. No further problems after the surgery.

Going to echo what others have said, sounds like you've found a great vet!
Thanks for this!

Googley,

So glad he had the PU surgery (I was previously unclear on which surgery he had) and is recovering well, and so glad your vet is working with you on the cost! My cat did fine with the surgery, although it does take them awhile to fully heal. His PU surgery was in 2010, I believe. My cat still had stones in his kidneys post PU surgery that moved along (through the bladder and onward) and he was able to pass them w/out any visible issue. He has been on a kidney diet since his stone issues started (Purina UR St/Ox...I try to get him to eat more wet than dry because it's sooo much better for his kidneys!), and it has been extremely helpful in helping to prevent new stones from forming.

Charlie is HOME!
I brought him home after work tonight. He is exploring the apartment and Chloe is hiding from him. He will have to go into the bathroom when I am gone and asleep so I want to let him wander around til then. After that I will put food out for Chloe. Charlie got fed at the vet.

Funny story from the vet: Charlie really liked being syringe fed even after he was able to eat his own food. They said that he would wait til they came around to syringe feed him. Then one time they were going to do that and take his vitals and saw him eating his food by himself so they tip toed away to let him eat. They all loved him. He is so loveable! The vet tech said that if I didn't want him any of them would take him. He also took out some of his sutchers (sp?) so he is now in a hard plastic cone to keep him from doing that any more. He will go back in about a week to get the sutchers and staples removed. I am so glad to have him home!

So happy he's home and doing better!
Thanks for letting us know how he is. How are you doing?

On another note, did the vet mention anything about changing his diet to help with this in the future or is it something that is not affected by it? My Jake, coon mix, had similar problems and not sure if the same exactly, but they put him a special food that seemed to help prevent it once the blockage was removed. Perhaps this might help.

Hang in there. Sending hugs to y'all, ((((( G, Charlie, Chloe)))).

Charlie went back to the vet tonight to get his staples removed. The doc who I have been working with wasn't there and she wanted to see his PU site. So we will be going back again this week so she can look at it. The vet tech said that Charlie thought it was funny feeling them taking the staples out. He has been a little lethargic today, but still eating and drinking. He is eating so much. I think that he is trying to make up for the days he didn't have much of an appetite. He is doing good eating and drinking. They said that he should keep the cone on for about another 5 days to make sure everything finishes healing and he doesn't pick at anything.

Chloe continues to hiss and Charlie and Charlie makes a low tone whine when they come across each other. I hope they get this all figured out.

Thank you so much everyone for all the support through this whole thing. It was so stressful. Your help and support made this so much easier.

Googley, I suspect that Chloe can smell the vet's office on Charlie. That's why she's hissing. I used to have bother-sister litter mates. She would be downright ugly toward him when she could smell the vet's office on him. The smell will eventually wear off.
