This time it's not Krissy, it's Ivan. Sunday he had a swelling on the side of his jaw near his throat. I thought maybe he got a bug bite that swelled. It wasn't painful. I put a drawing salve on it to try and bring the swelling down. Applied more of the goop yesterday. It's bigger today and he seems miserable from the swelling. So we are off to the vet to have it checked out.

It ought to be interesting. He's a farm dog. He's not fully trained to walk on a leash. He is a 100% outside dog - not house broken. We'll see how this trip goes.

The vet confirmed what I was afraid of. The "swelling" was actually a tumor. She said the end result was going to be the same, but offered some possible palliative care. She gave me a few minutes to think it over by myself. I sat on the floor with Ivan. He was too weak to stand up. I looked him in the eyes and he asked me to end it. I loved on him a bit and told the tech I'd decided to put him down.

The staff at the office are so kind. They gave me some time to say good bye before we did the deed. I came home and buried him. He's very close to where I buried Al. There are pretty bushes in front of where he is.

I know this was the right thing to do, but damn it do hurt.

Thanks everyone. Too drained to say much more.

This might sound like I'm rushing things, but I'm not. I've been thinking for a couple of months now that it was time to look for another dog. I spent some time at the local animal control website and SPCA site looking at dogs for adoption. I found several that called to me. Am going to check out one at SPCA tomorrow and hit animal control on Thursday.

Liz, I am so sorry. I saw your post about Mikey first then went looking to see if you posted something about Ivan.

I have been in your shoes and I have been in your vets shoes. Neither is great. I am very very sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry to hear about Ivan, may he rest in peace. I'm sure the other animals know and am not surprised about Mikey. How lovely that is he is comforting you.

Everyone has a different time frame of when may or may not feel is the right time to find a new member of the family. Those we lost can never be replaced but can help ease the loss giving a new home to someone who needs it. I hope you find a good match in the days ahead.

I too would like to express my sympathy for your loss.
I just lost my Matthew 2 weeks and 1 day ago.
Nobody can tell you when it is time to get another dog friend.
When I lost my very 1st beagle, I swore never again. A couple months later I had 2 boy beagle puppies in my house.
They found me.
You will know when it is time just like you knew when it was time to say goodbye to Ivan.
