I considered this jokingly a while ago, but I'm starting to think about trying to get a support animal again. I just have no idea how to go about it, and I'm afraid of hitting roadblocks. I currently live in an apartment that is no pets. Cats and dogs were especially noted when I moved in. But, according to the FHA, an emotional support animal would be exempt from that rule.
The first roadblock I can see is the manager of my building. He mentioned when I first moved in that he's allergic to cats, but that's the type of support animal I want to get. I've had cats all my life, and when I'm especially depressed or anxious they always made me feel better. Plus I just don't have the time or energy to take care of a dog, no matter how small. I've kind of talked to my boyfriend about the idea, and he has encouraged me in the past to just wait until my lease is up and we find a place together. But my lease isn't up until August, and then there still is the problem of finding a place before I can move out. I have been having extreme problems and I think it would be better for me to do this now, rather than waiting. I'm just so scared of the process, and of having to deal with any roadblocks to doing this. |

I would say go for it if it weren't for the fact that your apt manager is allergic. Not fair to him.

That was my first thought, but what about me? He only comes in the apt if something needs fixing (I've called him once in 6 months), and for twice yearly checks of smoke detectors. I don't know what other options I have if he is the block to doing it this way.

Go to your doctor and have a medical letter written saying you need a cat for emotional support. Then make sure your cat is short haired so there is not much dander. Tell you landlord what the doctor said and you are willing to get shampoo and other things to make the cat dander free. And go from there. Good luck! (((hugs)))

If your building manager is allergic, tell him to take an allergy pill. He cannot refuse you an emotional support animal because of his allergies.
