Yesterday, he started sneezing and today it's worsened to excessive drooling as well. I've already got an appt to take him to a vet in the morning but I'm not sure what to do tonight. This is absolutely heartbreaking. I feel helpless. It's like watching my kid suffer and there's nothing I can do to make them better.

He's acting somewhat normal, he's eating, but he is sopping wet from the drool. I have to keep wiping his mouth every few minutes. Any suggestions for what to do until I can get him to the vet in the morning? I hate seeing him like this.

I'm not sure what's the exact cause of your cats symptoms and sorry this is happening. Is he an indoor cat and how old is he? Does he have gum disease. Is he up to date on his shots? Usually there's one emergency vet open but they charge more. Is he having trouble breathing? Here's some info and I sure hope its not serious. let us know tomorrow what the vet says.

Hi Lynn,

Thanks for the link. He's an indoor cat, up to date on shots, no gum disease that I know of. I think it's an upper respiratory infection but I don't know where it came from. I feel so helpless right now!

I will check in after the vet and let everyone know how it works out. I'd take him to an emergency vet if I could but I don't have the extra money. I just hope I can keep him comfortable and happy until the morning --- though he just wants to sleep. I'm the one that's a basket case!

Just got home. The vet says its a viral infection. We have an antihistamine and an antibiotic to give him and he should be fine in a few days.

Thanks for the update ManicDad - I bet you're relieved its not more serious. Nice to see you're a good pet owner and taking care of your cat. Cats are hard to give meds to in my experience - I hope your in more cooperative.

I crushed it up in ice cream and he lapped it up. I'm very relieved it's not more serious! He just looks pitiful. He's breathing thru his mouth since his nose is plugged up and that's what's causing the drool. Not eating anything, which the vet said would probably happen. But he is drinking water. That's a relief.

Good he took his medicine. I hope the ice cream won't give him diarrhea. Whenever I've had cats, they're so hard to give medication. I suppose they're just like us - no appetite, if he can't smell or taste his food. I hope he feels better in a few days.

Aww, I am glad to hear kitty is feeling better and that it wasn't more serious!

(I feel so helpless when mine aren't feeling well. Especially because they are such troopers, so when they really are not feeling well and showing it, it's really hard to see them like that. mine does these little pitiful meows along with looking sad. it's so pitiful)

Milk products are not really good for cats (it's sort of a myth actually).

I get the liquid form of antibiotic so it's a bit easier to dispense. Also, you can hide the pill in a "pill pocket". Your vet or local feed/supply store should have them in stock. and to kitty, they are DE-LISH

Drinking water, using the box, etc. = good signs. Appetite should come back, too. Please keep us posted!
Thanks for this!
