My room mate's cat is slowly warming up to me, to the point that she'll now cuddle up next to me, when I'm on the couch. She seems healthy. Her owner takes good care of her, she has lots of food and fresh water, and full roam of the apartment.

But she never purrs. Not when she's snuggling, not when she's being petted, not at all. Overall she;s a pretty quiet cat. She doesn't really meow, she just makes this little murp sound when she wants attention.

My room mate got her when she was 4 weeks old, and she was a feral rescue, so I don't think she had much socialization as a cat.

I'm just wondering if anyone can shed some light on her not purring.

Thanks.

Could she be purring very quietly? Some cats purr louder than others. I can hardly hear one of my cats purr.

Can you put your ear against her chest or something to see if you can tell if she's purring?
Thanks for this!

My cat hardly purrs at all. He typically does it early in the morning when he has the most energy but for 99% of the day he doesn't, even if he is happy. All cats are different.

Is the not purring a change in behavior? If it is it might be a sign of a problem.
If the kitty has never been much of a purrer it's not a problem. Some cats purr, some don't.

Really? I just assumed purring was built in to them.

Thank you all for your responses. It makes me feel better to know that some cats just don't purr. My room mate said, she's never purred in the 6 years he's had her.

I posted the same question to my friends on Facebook, and one of them said that his cat didn't start purring until she was 10 years old.

Oh well, she's still a little sweetie.
