Folks, I had to rush Hazel to the emergency vet. Am currently in a room waiting for them to check her.

We were in the yard this afternoon. Me doing clean up work. Hazel exploring. Heard her yelp. Called her over and there was blood pouring out of her left nostril. Took her in the house and cleaned her up. Didn't see any damage on the outside of her nose so went back outside to finish what I was doing. Went in to check on her an saw two small punctures on the side of her nose! Called my vet's office to see about bringing her in because I suspect a snake bite! They tell me they are not equipped. for that.

Vet came in while I was typing this. It's a venomous snake bite. They are working up the cost of treatment. At this point I want them to do whatever they need to do, cost be damned.

Folks, I can't lose my girl. Please keep us in your thoughts.

Will update as I know more.

They are keeping her for at least 24 hours. They want to observe her while they give her the anti-venom. I basically told them to do what they need to to save her.

Emergency vet called just after I got home. She said Hazel was doing well and she is cautiously optimistic.

I am making myself be positive about this. Emotionally I'm swinging between panic and being calm. Am telling myself to keep sending her positive energy.

Sorry, not sure if I'm making any sense at this point. Will post updates when I know more.

Poor girl. I just googled about it to inform myself. We are here if you want to talk about it. Too bad you can't stay at the animal hospital

I'm sorry. That is so scary. I had a cat who had a very bad vaccine reaction as a tiny kitten and wound up in the emergency vet for a weekend. It was one of the most heart-breaking things I've been through but they did fix him up and aside from fearing vets for the result of his life he was fine. I hope and pray Hazel is well soon too.

I'm so glad she has an owner who cared to check on her and get her help.

UPDATE The vet who cared for Hazel overnight called about half an hour ago. My baby girl is doing well! They only had to give her one vial of anti-venom. Vitals are good. They are keeping her to monitor her, but she might be able to come home tonight!

Thank you for all the positive thoughts. Please keep them coming. She is not out of the woods yet.

Oh, good news for sure! Sending more purple energy vibes for good luck. Though it isn’t luck, you have fantastic vets!

UPDATE #2 - Got a call from the day time vet at the clinic. Hazel is scheduled for more blood work at 2. Results of the tests will dictate if she can come home tonight. Apparently is is possible for the venom to decrease from the anti-venom, then reinfiltrate the body. Not sure my explanation makes sense. My brain is mush today. Anyway, if test results are good she should be able to come home. If not good she will have to stay.

Fingers crossed for good results.

From what i read, before the anti-venom can act against the venom in the bloodstream, some of the venom has been absorbed into the organs. Then the affected animal is seemingly stable. Then it depends on how badly the organs, like the liver and kidneys, were initially impacted. So they keep checking urine output etc. So basically the anti-venom diminishes the dose of venom received, but its not like an antibiotic where it "kills venom cooties."

HAZEL IS HOME!!!!!! :dancingchill:

My baby girl is home.

Poor thing. Her whole head is swollen and she has fluid here and there on her body. It will eventually go down. I need to keep my eye on her for a few days. She goes to see her vet Monday for a follow up. Things are a million times better than they were 24 hours ago. She is groggy from meds. I am exhausted from stress. I suspect we will both sleep soundly tonight.

Thank you again to everyone for your support. You helped make a terrible time easier to bear.

She begged while I ate my supper. I know I shouldn't encourage begging, but shared with her.

She just got her own supper so I could get her meds in her. She's sacked out on her new bed now.

Just saw this thread and am checking in. I'm so happy Hazel is okay. I'm sure it helped that you got her to the vet fast. You're a great critter mom.

I don't blame you. I'd have shared my food with her, too.

She seems to be doing well this morning. She is her usual happy self. Her eyes are bright.

It's good she is such a chow hound. I'm feeding her canned food. Her face is so swollen, eating kibble might hurt. Anyway, I stick her meds in the food and she snarfs everything down.

I had to help her up on the bed last night, but we got to sleep together. Then had snuggle time this morning.

I'm so glad to have my baby girl home. I would have fallen apart if she didn't make it.

Oh my, just saw this thread. So glad you noticed the bite marks & got Hazel to the emergency vet. Quick action helps. So glad it all turned out good for Hazel. Ugh, we do have copperheads around here but they stay closer to the creek. Have only seen huge black rat snakes & some baby snakes (inside my house that Gabe kitty found

Good news for Hazel deserves celebration & sharing dinner
