Dog breeds being banned (UK)

I don't agree with banning dog breeds, yes dogs are bred for specific purposes but with training a lot of the behaviours can be controlled, even collies can have their herding instincts redirected onto something else

There's a petition over the whole "ban all bully breed type dogs"

(the government don't give a rats behind over petitions that are not through their own site, so sites like change, etc, they ignore)

it just gets to me cause where will it end, we don't ban a nationality of people in this country just based on what they might do, so why are we doing it to dogs?

All banning anything - dog or not - achieves is it drives the behaviour underground and makes it more dangerous for everyone.

I think these dogs need to be trained from the beginning--like other such dogs. But some people like them to be vicious.

Sadly, here in the US there are those who want to ban certain nationalities. But I agree with you. Not every dog of a breed is the same as all others.

Yes I’ve been reading a lot about this and sadly it doesn’t seem like banning breeds works.

The problem seems to be the people who deliberately breed and train dogs to be aggressive. Ban the breed and certain people will choose another breed to be their attack dogs. The problem will continue.

I don’t know the solution, maybe licensing certain breeds or enforcement of liability insurance idk. How do you deal with irresponsible owners.

I vote for banning some kinds of people 😐

Totally agree with Disco. Here, some breeds considered dangerous, the owner has to get a license and they have to follow some norms such as, taking them out with a muzzle. They have to pay for a insurance and all.
But, still there are people who try to break the lay and punishments are merely against the animal itself, especially if the doggie bites someone or attacks someone.

Even sadder are the fact that there are still assholes who train dogs to fight. Once a doggie is trained for this it’s pretty much than impossible to be recovered.

The problem is not breed, the problem is people. This is the same that happens with cars. Some people are so brainless and irresponsible that driving by their cars They are a walking danger.

The solution isn't to ban breeds, it'll just affect those who stay on the right side of the laws. The crinimals will just carry on as they always have. cause they don't care about the laws.

Due to the high incidences of pit bull attacks homeowner insurance companies will not insure your home if you own one.

This is kind of a tangent, but relates to Pitts.

Anyone read "The Lost Dogs" by Jim Gorant? It is the story of the dogs involved in the Michael Vick dog fighting case. Of the 51 dogs rescued only two had to be put down. One was a female who'd been bred so often her reproductive organs were so damaged she was best off put down. The other was an intact male who was so vicious from fighting he was dangerous. Twenty-two others went to Best Friends sanctuary in Utah, not because they were vicious, but because they had never learned how to be dogs growing up in horrible circumstances. Others became pets. One became a therapy dog. The book dispels a lot of myths about the breed. I will warn everyone the beginning of the book can be triggering and disturbing because it describes some of what was done to the dogs.

What an interesting book! I haven’t read it but it sounds really good to learn a little more about our faithful friends but you are right. I wouldn’t be able to read the book because I’m extremely sensitive to hear or read things about abusing pets or abusing children. It’s so extremely sad.
It was a miracle that one of the doggies became a Therapy dog.
