A researcher in Japan created a drug which can treat and prevent kidney failure in cats. It could allow cats to live to 30(!) years!

edited to add - forgot you have to download the smartnews app to read their stories. Short version of the article is that a researcher in Japan developed a vaccine for cats that can treat/prevent kidney failure in cats. Kidney failure is prevalent in cats over 10 years old. Thoughts are that cats started on the vaccine as kittens and receiving annual boosters could live to be 30!

Wow @lizardlady that is incredible. I guess kidney failure is a common cause of death in cats?

Wow. That would have been awesome. But what if you adopt an older cat? Sir was 6 when I got him.

Nammu, I believe it is helpful regardless of the cat's age.

The vaccine is undergoing drug trials in Japan. Depending on the results of testing the vaccine could be available in 2025.

Amazing. In that case, I might need to "will" Caroline to somebody else. since that's very likely longer than I'll live. I'm glad to hear about it. Thanks, liz.

Trav, I spoke to my vet about my critters when I'm gone. I am going to put it in my will for the cats and dog go to her so she can find new homes for them.

I lost a cat to kidney failure some years ago. She had feline leukemia and the kidney problems were related to that. She made it to 8 years, which I've been told is a lot for a cat with leukemia.
