Had to take Hazel to the vet again yesterday. Ever since she came to live with me there were times I wondered if she was limping or if I was seeing things. Couple of weeks ago I was certain of it. Over the weekend it was obvious she was favoring her right hind.

Off to the vet we go. I figured it was arthritis. It's not. She tore her ACL. Surgery will be 4-5000! I love my baby girl, but holy crow!

The vet and I decided on a non-surgical route to see if it helps. She's on leash walk only for 4 weeks plus an anti-inflammatory med. After the four weeks we'll see how she is doing.

I've been doing some research about treatment options. Obviously there's surgery.. There's a knee brace available. Or we can just treat her with pain meds as needed. Going to try rest/meds first to see if that helps.

Poor Hazel. I hope the non-surgical option works for her.

Ohhh poor Hazel. Wow! That’s awful. I hope the non-surgical approach works.

Are there dog chiropractors? When i had my knee problem, the dr just pulled my leg and unhitched something that had gotten twisted and no surgery was needed after all. Cuz hokey smoke thats a lot of dough no joke.

I don't know if there are doggie chiropractors. I don't think pulling on her leg would be a good idea since the ACL is already torn. Seems like pulling could tear it more. That gives me an idea though. My vet does vet acupuncture. I will ask her about that.

You're not kidding about the surgery being a ton of money. BG's surgery before he did was between $3&4k. Hazel's snake bite escapade was another $4-5k. Surgery would be another$4-5k. I love my critters, but I'm not made out of money.

One time my mom told me, "Susie across the street has a tumor on her thigh, she's going for surgery next week." We were like, they rent but they are paying for THAT? Mom was being funny - susie was the name of both the dog and the dog's owner who worked in the factory. Mom did not have a lot of funny stories, but when she did, she got you good!

The acupuncture sounds good! Some gentle exercise - doggie hot tub?

A torn ACL? Ouch! I've been there. Maybe the conservative approach will work.

I tore the ACL in my knee in my late 30's playing racquetball. Within 5 years it deteriorated & when surgery was finally done, there was no ACL at all left in my knee & the ortho had to cut & use a tendon to run up through my knee to stabalize it. Good muscle shape in the leg helps but nothing will actually stabalize it ever without the actual surgery & PT (for doggies). The brace can help but on a limited level because the muscles need to stay in good shape in the leg too.

I get the horrible costs for sure. My life was nothing but vet bills for years & then I paid the vet bills for my daughters doggie that had serious heart problems

I had that problem, too. In my sixties, I finally opted for knee replacement, with PT. It rarely hurts now and I get around well. Of course, now my right knee is acting up due to arthritis. Sad situations for people and doggies.

No, Hazel is not at the vet again. Am updating her ACL news.

The vet called with Miette's lab results this morning. We discussed Hazel while I had her on the phone. We agreed to just manage the situation instead of surgery. I see no point in putting her through surgery if she's not in pain.

You worried me for a moment. Here's hoping that Ms. Hazel's condition can continue to be managed without surgery.
