I worked at the post office. Employees were feeding a stray in the parking lot. The Maintenance manager had a custodian trap it in a have a heart. Without asking, I took the trap and cat home. She was a pretty grey cat with big tufts in her ears. I released her in a small bathroom with food and water. We had two cats and they were very curious about the smell in the bathroom. It was a small bathroom with a bath, toilet, and storage closet. Day 3 I went in to look for the cat and she was gone. Couldn't find her anywhere. The closet had 4 shelves. Shelf 3 at neck height had a carousel with bottles of lotion, shampoo, etc. Nothing appeared to be disturbed. She had knocked stuff down going in, and spun it around so everything looked normal. She was hiding behind it.
One of my other cats came into the bathroom and was on the countertop when Misty (short for Mysterious) saw her, and leapt from the closet to land on the counter on the opposite side of the room, right beside her. My cat about had a heart attack. Before long, Misty was social and enjoying life. She didn't have all that long as she had Feline Leukemia. I'm sure the shelter would have just put her down. At least she got to know what love felt like. One of my other cats, Tux(edo) could open the kitchen cabinet door, disappear inside, and close the door behind him when he saw the pet carrier in the living room. He know someone was going to the vet that day.

Oh what a wonderful story @forestx5 - you did a great thing giving that cat a loving home for the rest of its days.
