My smokie is the color of your ferret. I have to take all 5 to the vets for their annual distemper shot. Since there has not been a case of rabies in Oregon in a domestic animal since 1937, I decided not to immunize them for rabies. 5 ferrets and my dog for annual exams and shots eats up the budget. My boys all weigh 4 pounds plus. One of my females is three pounds. My oldest is just 2 pounds.

Simon looks like a youngster. I loved having the baby ferrets. They take to toy better. I try all sorts of toys and they are more interested in the plastic bag it came in.
Thanks for this!

Simon is 2. I have 3 other ferrets also. I will post more pictures of them some other time. Last month my two oldest ferrets had their vaccines and one of them had a very bad reaction. He almost died. It was very scary but he is doing very well now! They just have to keep him over night any time he has vaccines from now on.

Awwww he's cute. Looks really cheeky
Always thought a ferret would be fun. Are they a lot of work to look after or not?

They are really fun that's for sure. They are sort of a lot of work. They need to be out and playing for at least two hours a day because they have so much energy and get depressed really easy if they don't get to play. Mine are all litter trained so I just have to scoop the litter everyday. So it's not to bad if you have 2 hours a day to spend with them!

Very cool pics the1,

I'm sure they love their play time with you. And they can also play with each other too.

Sounds like you have got a great system going. I didn't realize they needed injections...ouchies. But better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks! I want another but I know that I cannot afford it right now. Paying for school and all. I am working on separating them two and two. They are all in the same cage right now but it's really really big. as big as a refrigerator! I got another just like it but they all love each other to much to be separated. Not sure if I should follow through with it or not.

This is Charlie. He isn't as photogenic as the rest. This is the best I've gotten.
Now all 4 of mine are posted in this thread!

On ferret vaccinations it is best to stay at the vets for an hour after to guarantee there is no reaction. Beneydral can be given prior on any ferret that has had a previous reaction. AND distemper and rabies shots should be seperated by two weeks. Some vets are unfamiliar with both these things.

That's how my vet does it. They give distemper and then a few weeks later she gives them the rabies vaccine. Both Oliver and Simon get benedryl because they have both had reactions. Simon just got redness where as Oliver actually was unable to walk around and was vomiting. It was very scary so now both of them stay the whole day they get the shots in case they need to be further treated.

Ferrets are, like dogs, part of the canine family. The distemper shot yearly is mandatory. My ferrets get 5 hours daily outside the cages. I opted to discontinue rabies shots as unnecessary.

Females must be spayed or bred or they will die from aplaxtic anemia. Ferrets have powerful hormones.

All mine were litter trained till one broke from the program.

Where I live the distemper vaccine isn't mandatory... Only the rabies vaccine is mandatory.
