I've never spanked anything! I have tried all the positive reinforcement with Fozzie, and he does respond, but he has a bad habit of barking at night when he wants to go outside in the middle of the night. He was in bed with me, and kept trying to wake me, obviously to go out for potties. I took him to the back door, and said, "NO barking!" I went back to be...3 a.m., and he began barking. The night was warm and I have a new covered deck where he can sleep, which he actually likes. He continued barking for almost 30 minutes, and I went to the back, opened the door, and said..."come in!" He stood there looking at me with trepidation. I continued to coax him inside, though he sensed he was in trouble. When he came in, I spanked him! I put him in his kennel cage, scolding him all the way. His feelings were hurt, I could tell, from the look in his sweet brown eyes. I felt bad.
But!!! He has asked to go out several nights since the spanking, and he hasn't barked! I don't know if this was a healthy way to handle the problem, but it seems to have worked!

Patty,

It sounds like it was the right thing to do! I know how much you love him. Your new back deck sounds wonderful. I love how you have continued to make improvements to your abode over time! You go, Girl!

LOL, Wmd!
Well, I never spanked my daughter, and now she is giving me much grief...moving to Turkmenistan, of all places, and worrying the life out of me! Am thinking now, maybe I should have spanked her!
Fozzie is outside right now barking away, but I think he has learned NOT to bark at night...I hope!

i got an anti-barking collar that just sprays them with citronella when they bark. dogs don't like citronella and it worked like a charm and i can now sleep at night.
