I am searching for some tips to help my boyfriend feel supported while he is adjusting to his recent diagnosis and new medications. Is there anything that anyone has done for you or that you wish someone would do/say? He is very open with me about how he is feeling but I never really know what to say...I just tell him I'm here for him and let me know if he needs anything but he never asks for anything...

The only things I can think of that help are to not treat him any differently because of the dx and also to not let his moods influence yours too much. It's always more difficult when people let my depression pull them down or feed into my hypomanic and mixed episodes with more energy.
Also, educate yourself on the disorder and on the drugs and treatments he's undergoing. And, for the love of the gods, memorize the legal statutes pertaining to inpatient care in your state and decide in advance what you're going to do if he ever has a really bad episode. Oh, if only I'd done this in advance it would've saved me so much heartache with my fiance... |
