My mom has gone over 30years with paranoid and disorganized schizophrenia. She is living alone in an apartment in La and I live in another state. She is currently suffering with numerous skin wounds for over 5 years due to picking and possible carcinoma but she hasn't and will not see a doctor. She seems to be blinded by the paranoia of her disease...thinking she has caused this and a doctor will think she's crazy. She's also increasingly embarrassed about being scared to hear what a doctor might tell her...cancer. I have flown to her to assist get to a doctor but that didn't work. Now I have been talking to her every day to try to help her get past the fears and talk though the hesitation...over a month later here I an with still no progress. My mom is 68 years old and I've read that schizophrenia can improve with age. She does seem to be more human lately. She's never asked for my help before. She's always been somewhat cold in her ways but now she's telling me how much she loves me and how proud of me she is...I hate to doubt get feelings but you have to understand she used to tell me things like," go back to the ***** who had you" (I'm adopted) and call me the cleaning lady, a *****, a drug addict, a bad person. I know she can and has been manipulative and selfish so it scares me when she builds it up...it's a long way down. I feel emotionally torn with a 2 year old and a 6 month old and my own physical issues and my own depression. But what will the future hold for any of us?

When I was actively psychotic I actually did love people more...in my baseline state my emotions are very closed off so the disease does change the expression of how people feel. As far as carcinoma I'm not sure why you're just assuming she has cancer maybe she's fine. Does she see a doc for the sz? Does she take statins or anything like that from a GP...I mean if you are worried about her lifespan that's just as important as the high drama stuff like cancer. If you can't get her to go to one appointment it unlikely that she will get to the numerous appointments required for cancer treatment. Perhaps you can take a picture of what you think is cancer and show that to a doctor specifically a dermatologist for follow up that way you can know if it is likely cancer or not before you do anything dramatic because the only thing I can think of is forced treatment and you have to prove her a danger to self before you can do that and quite frankly the state laws are so variable that I'm not sure it will be enough if she is otherwise taking care of herself.

Thank you so much for your feedback. the reason I think its a cancer is because it's been progressively getting worse and worse over the last five to six years. I have showed it to my local doctor and in his personal opinion he believes it is a carcinoma. once again I appreciate your input so much thank you so much. I have already contacted the local authorities and she is not a threat to herself or anybody else. she does not have a doctor and she is not treated for her AZ.

Ok so that's really trouble if it is cancer perhaps she could use this photo based service at least for diagnosis?

How a Stanford dermatologist is using telemedicine to reach underserved populations in California | Scope Blog

Direct Dermatology: The Online Dermatology Clinic

Telemedicine is actually pretty good for dermatology but she would still have to go in to get treated if actually sick but perhaps a doctor could help convince her?
