Hi there,
I need some help. My younger brother has been missing for 18 years. At the time that he cut himself off completely from family and friends he was diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic. We have searched for years online and in prisons and hospitals and now finally we have found that he is living in an SRO. He is now 50. We have not tried to contact him yet and don't know what to do or what to expect. Any advice welcome. Thanks. |

Since you have searched for him for so many years, I would think that you would want to meet up with him if possible. I would contact him and see if he wanted to meet up at a neutral location so that both of you would feel comfortable. Just be prepared that he may not want to have contact and that you have to accept that.
I've seen family reunite but sometimes it is still a strained relationship after many years. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I don't know what an SRO is, could you contact someone there and ask them to approach your brother and tell him that you are interested in contacting him? My family found me in a state hospital and the head nurse talked to me and let me know my family loved me and wanted to stay in contact. It was awhile before I saw them but I wrote letters at first. Then phone calls.

I'm interested why people want to cut off contact from their families. Why would my brother want this? Does anyone have any ideas?
