Hey All,

Just writing for support. Not sure if my brother contacted anyone else in the family, but he went in (likely in a paranoid state) to the hospital today and the doctor noticed he had, according to the nurse I spoke with, "cuts on his hands" and is going to be psychiatrically evaluated. My brother has been homeless for a few years and despite signs of severe mental illness, likely schizophrenia, he refuses treatment. He is 25 and I'm afraid that if they diagnose him and give him meds he still won't go with their medical advice. So sad and I feel powerless.

Let us know how things have been going with your brother. Since his lifestyle appears to have been so firmly established, it may take several tries at getting professional help before he shows any consistent improvement. I suggest that you keep in mind that the hospital is just a temporary holding environment, and he won't be there very long. The key to any success if following the discharge plan. I would imagine there would be plenty of resources for him in your area, but following through is the important thing.
