Ive had my assessment with a great therapist. She doesnt label from DSMV, or anything like that, but she said politely that I have personality issues, which Im assuming she means a personality disorder, but she doesnt think that label help so that's that. Im a bit upset that she had a sheet explaining my problems but because I was yakking as it was my last session, she didnt tell me the rest of it. She is putting me forward for interpsersonal and psychodynamic therapy, but I would rather talk to her for a bit but its not possible as she only does assessments, courses and cbt. Do you think this therapy would work

Hi, mala,

T's don't seem to like sticking their patients into little boxes if they can help it. The universe of mental illness doesn't fit neatly into DSM categories. Some people are classics of their kind, but most people aren't. If your T says you have "personality issues" that could mean you have a "personality disorder" or it could mean you're somewhere on a spectrum that has a "personality disorder" at one end. You know, it doesn't really matter.

Lots of people really like specific diagnoses in order to be part of a group, like wearing a nametag at a party. But being part of a group isn't going to help anyone (I think) solve their problems. Solving problems happens in therapy and yes, therapy will work for you if you're utterly serious about it and push it as far as it can go, through quite a bit of hurting if necessary. It takes dedication. But it's the only way out. Good luck!
