Hi I've got BPD, dependent & OCP, I've had these for many years, and whilst I take sodium valproate for epilepsy ( also can be used for mood)I really need a medication to sort these mood swings out.
I don't just use meds I practice mindfulness too however it's just not working. My son is autistic so I need to be on a normal level, luckily I'm quite good at masking but my husband believes the mood swings are becoming more frequent and more intense..... I'm afraid I'm going to end up pushing people away. I've tried a few different meds such as ariproprizole etc but they didn't help. Can anyone help me out with their own experiences of an effective medication please Thanks Jk

I use Lamictal. It can be used as a mood stabilizer and anti epileptic.

Thank you for responding I suppose I'm slightly dubious of changing my anti seizure med but I need to do something, just rang my nurse for appointment.
I've been on the sodium valproate for 7 years and whilst it helps with the seizures it has never helped the mood swings. I'm currently taking these with sertraline and that's it, everyone else here seems to take a combination? Thanks again Jk

Hi JK,
I take sodium valproate along with Abilify, and they together seem to help with my mood swings. I also take paroxetine for depression, but used to take sertraline for many years. The various pdocs I saw told me sodium valproate is often used along with another mood stabilizer or antipsychotic to help stabilize mood swings. You might want to ask your pdoc if this might be your case.

Thanks, I will have to speak with the doc, got to see a nurse first.... Everything takes so long! 25 years of these mood swings and it's just getting too much, realistically there's only so much my family and myself can take.
Thanks again Jk

Hello, I also take sodium valproate for epilepsy and found upping my dose and taking Valium when required helps my mood to a small degree. I haven't been able to get my head around mindfulness (and usually any suggestion of breathing exercises or that I meditate when my mood isn't great do not go down well!) I'd be really interested to hear if you find anything that works as I'm pretty uncomfortable with trying new medications as I've had some bad experiences in the past. I hope you find something that helps you soon.

Topamax, Tegretol, Trileptal, Lamictal, and lithium are all mood stabilizers that can control mood swings. I think that all of those control seizures as well minus the lithium. These medications can come with unpleasant side effects. Antipsychotics can help with mood swings as well, but I prefer to avoid them after having tried a few.
Tell us if you find anything that works! ![]() Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk |

Can respierdol ( misspelled sorry) be used as a mood stabilizer? I'm thinking of asking the doc to add that to my meds as it helped me once before.

Can respierdol ( sorry mispelled) be used as a mood stabilizer? I've been on it before in a low dose and it helped me with sleep and just had a calming effect on
Me. Was thinking about asking my doc to try me on it again. |
