I know it's none other specified but common. Lol I got back from iraq, a month later, after some SI, went to the psych ward for 7 days and was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Then they sent me to a military psy.d for 20min where he said I have Personality Disorder NOS. No mmpi-2 or other personality inventory mind you. After they gave me the boot(honorably) my therapist that Ive been seeing for 6 months has dx'd me with depression and anxiety. Lol I'm soo confused. Hmm I need one of those $1000 dollar psychological battery of tests, then I can stop paying $180 a session to talk to a nice lady about how lazy I am XD

I can relate. I have DDNOS Dissociative Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. Means I have a little of this and a bit of that but not enough to shore up a "real" diagnosis of one specific thing. WTF is personality disorder NOS!?

I wish doctors would stop being so lazy and actually find some things out. It would be like having a seziure and being too lazy to take an MRI or do a complete neurological examination. Then again it was a military psy.d. So the guy was hired on the lowest bidder, hence service members opt to get surgery from private hospitals instead of getting the "do surgery as quick and sloppy as possible" route military doctors take. Lol the military's mental health system and VA are such a mess. I think we could get better surgery and mental health care in mexico.... Actually thats not a bad idea! Might have to take a vacation down there sometime

All NOS means is that you don't fit specifically into the DSM criteria for one of the personality disorder diagnoses. This could be because you don't quite have all the criteria needed, because it's not as severe for all criteria, because you are more of a blend between two or more, etc. The important part is that they form a good psychological profile of YOU, not a diagnosis. It's YOU that needs treatment, not a diagnosis that needs treatment. And sometimes are bodies and minds just don't "cooperate" with existing technology and knowledge, and we don't get to know what's going on. That's frustrating and maybe anxiety provoking, but it's sometimes just what it is.

More people meet dx criteria for 'NOS' than for particular diagnoses. NOS is probably the most prevalent disorder lol. It doesn't mean that they don't have enough information to give you a 'proper dx' (though sometimes it is used for that). Sometimes... It simply is what it is, as gg said.

Sometimes they will use the NOS when they aren't sure what your exact disorder is...or if it's combined (co-morbid) and it's to add credence so you can receive benefits. (Sometimes.)

You stated you're back from Iraq, are you suffering PTSD perhaps, and they are reluctant to dx you, or aren't seeing you enough (or you aren't sharing with them enough) to make that determination?
