My girlfriend is really depressed, irritable and moody lately. She believes she doesn't have any friends and no one wants to hang out with her. When this happens, she completely closes up and wants to be by herself. She also told me she has thought about throwing herself in front of a car or overdosing on pills. This is affecting our relationship - in fact, we almost broke up recently. However, she said she still wants to be with me and her feeling the way she does have nothing to do with "us" or her and I. Instead, she said, her self-esteem is very low and she doesn't realize how beautiful and amazing she really is. She also has personal baggage as well.

What should I do? I told her I'm willing to take a back seat in the relationship so she can figure herself out. I also told her I am willing to wait for her, because I believe she's worth the wait.

How do I keep things from ending badly? I really don't want to break up with her.

When I get like that, I get some appointments lined up with a psych counselor. I need to have my head screwed on straight every once in a while. I wish you the best of luck in supporting her - she's very lucky!
